Marriot and Lane together were amazing, I picked up an original 73 Ogdens Nutgone Flake Canadian import vinyl at a record fair last year, plays beautifully, one of my fav LPs

Nice to see the Small Faces there though. One of my favourite bands.

We’ve finally got a bunch of artists who have reached double figures! Here’s all the 10s.

Fleetwood Mac are the UK/US hybrid band I mentioned before the countdown, @Saddleworth2 will be delighted to see that Kate Bush is here along with The Small Faces and 80s icon Prince.

Being from the metropolitan borough of Wigan, The Verve qualify as one of the fifteen (Greater) Manc bands.

Would you believe that at #45, ABBA are the top EU band in the poll? They edged out Kraftwerk and U2 to take the European gold, those other two being the only other EU bands in the top 100.

ABBA as a bloke can’t possibly admit to liking them:-)
Kate Bush mad but talented
Small faces meh
Prince genius but don’t reallly like his style of songs
The verve good but too fleeting

No surprises there except some I would have thought would be higher even if they weren’t my picks.

Also Abba which I did vote for.




Strip away the pop amd campyness and listen and you will find some truly classic composition form Benny and Bjorn, the use of classical instruments alongside guitars and synths alongside lyrics which at times are very dark and sad.

But ultimately when I first started working night shifts in hotels in town in the early 90s at 2am in the morn the only real options for a beer were the press club, the piano bar or the village, so I spent many a night with chef, receptionists and waiting staff in the new union till 5am with Abba blasting out, my youthful indie indifference to pop and 70s kisch slowly being eroded :-)
