Exactly. I have a top 100 and top 250 which were both compiled by reference to various best of charts, by decade and then distilled down into songs that we both love and then add some that don’t appear on these lists. So much wonderful music. It’s very difficult to choose the best 10 Beatles, Stones, Zep tracks never mind doing justice to other genres that you like.As I said, I see a greatest one hundred and a favourite as two different things. I'm sure I've said much earlier on the this thread that it has the wrong title.
I know a lot of the songs in my personal top 100 wouldn't make it into a proper greatest 100. Even my top 100 is a bit of a fiction in that I only allow a very small number of artists two tracks when in truth I'd have at least 10 Zep songs in my top 100 plus numerous Van Halen tracks, multiple Rush, Who and Rolling Stones tracks etc. However, actually ranking tracks so cleanly is quite impossible: there's loads of songs that I like equally. It's just a game but a fun one.
Agreed — “greatest” by definition requires a group contribution and consensus I think; “favo(u)rite” requires only one person’s input.

It’s almost impossible. Particularly an artist you really love. I cannot pick a single Kate Bush track and call it my favourite. I feel I would be insulting her :-(. I also try and keep to songs that are recognisably songs rather than extended pieces of music. For example, BH chose Firth of Fifth by Genesis. I love that track but would never class it as a song. Tubular Bells is not a song ;-).Mine (and I may have referenced this) is over 300 favorite songs, but a band is only allowed to have one contribution. It's fun because it goes across lots of genres but it really forces you to winnow down your favorites among the bands you love. So I have a favorite Philip Glass piece, a favorite Public Enemy piece, a favorite Charlie Rich piece, where I might have a few to choose from, but I also have one-hit wonders like Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" -- but then when it comes bands I love like New Order or Sleater-Kinney or The Who where I could pick one of 10 or 20 songs, I really have to bear down to figure out what my fave is.
There's some wonderful songs there but only Grapevine made to my top 100 favourite songs. If I was trying to put together a proper, balanced 100 greatest songs, I'd probably include a few more, Superstition for sure. I'm an (old school) heavy metal kid not a soul boy so my personal top 100 reflects that. BH's just reflects what he likes most.
i made a suggestion elsewhere. If someone has the time, get everyone who wants to post their top 10 to do so, ranked from 1-10. If you rank a song #1 it gets 10 points, 2nd 9 points etc. Tabulate the results and rank the songs in order of points. You could then come up with a Bluemoon favourite 100. Would make a good play list I expect.this will be my next project ;)
