Bluemoon Angling Thread

I almost always use barbless too for other kinds of fishing and have never had a problem including big carp. The only reason I'm going on about it now is that I cannot come up with another explanation apart from bad luck but mathematically this does not look like luck. I'm a member of the Barbel Society and I've posted a question about this on their site. That contains some of the country's best barbel anglers so it will be interesting to see what they say.
Yeah it would be. Maybe there is a scientific explanation.

The experts at the Barbel Society have solved this for me already. The Drennan Specialist does not have an inturned eye and has a smaller gape. This is making for poor hooking mechanics in the small size.

I feel an absolute fool for not realising and changing earlier in the session.

ive not got round to reading it yet, as soon as i have i will get back to you, :)

the loss of so many fish ? could it be something to do with you being a bit shit? :)

im looking forward to you feature film though, will it be on youtube,or some other media platform.

ive looked at the problem @Didsbury Dave , could it be The Drennan Specialist does not have an inturned eye and has a smaller gape. This is making for poor hooking mechanics in the small size.

you should feel an absolute fool for not realising and changing earlier in the session.

you're welcome

Thanks PF, mate. I should have come to you first ;-)

With regards to the film, once I catch a proper big Calder perch I'm going to edit it into a youtube film. I've got loads of footage already but it's not going to be any good without a final scene. It's just talking a whole lot longer than I thought to get a big one!

nice one , im looking forward to it, get bernard cribbins to do the voice

Don't think it's been mentioned, Bob + Paul started again last night, on I player if you missed it.
Superb 1st episode, fishing for sea trout. Although I can't help thinking that Bob should have at least gained a basic grasp of it by now, instead of which he panics like a 4 year old when he hooks something, then usually falls over lol. Still love the show though.

@Didsbury Dave

Well done on catching Calder perch. And hard luck on your noddy-like sesh on the Ribble. Blimey, you had a bit of a mare losing 7 fish but that's how it goes sometimes mate.

I've used Drennan specialist Barbel hooks myself plenty of times and they are a good hook. However, i tend to use mainly Korda and Korum hooks nowadays because i think they are lighter and better strength to wire ratio than the Drennan specialist. I cant remember what patterns without looking through my hook wallets but i like a medium guage forged matt gunmetal (or black) hook with an inturned eye and point.

I know you know your stuff so i ain't gonna tell you how to fish but id be very reluctant to fish smaller than a 12s if double figure barbel are present, especially when night fishing. I also like to use shrink-tube to keep the hair to the middle of the gape so it stays directly above the bait, not always though, depends on the flow and if they're having it without too much suspicion or not.

What hooklengh did you use because i think i read you snapped off on two big fish? Could be that there's a few boulders under the water and big a barbel has run your line over one chafing the line. If that's the case then there's nowt you can do using mono, especially fluorocarbon. Did you inspect your hooklink for this where the line snapped of at? Maybe use a coated braid next time?

I've not been reading this thread much because i feel slightly envious that i have all the gear and bait ready to go but being a full-time carer for my elderly mum means i haven't been out once since the river season began.

I said id get on the PAAS waiting list but forgot to apply. So on reading your trip to the Balderstone i applied right away. Hopefully I'll get out somewhere before the first frosts, maybe the trent at A1 pits, but i should really try and get at least one session on my BAA book on the Severn if i can.

Better luck next time DD and tight lines everyone: )

Mentioned on a previous post, I’m pretty much a complete beginner, a friend has given me two rods and reels and tackle. He took me float fishing on an old river and I was pulling out some small roach and perch which I enjoyed. Would people agree that that’s a good way/place to start to learn the trade a bit? Or would anyone recommend different?

I’ll probably be heading out either on my own or with another compete beginner next time so looking for some tips.

Also, I caught 3 eels on the same peg last time I went! My mate said he’d never caught eel so it was surprising. They were a pain in the arse as they kept breaking my hook and I didn’t want to touch them anyway!

I think most of us would have started the same way mate. I love float fishing and rarely do anything else. Try to join a local club, members are usually friendly and helpful and local knowledge in anything you do is always good. Always practice good fish care, make sure you can use a disgorger or forceps and if going for anything larger a un hooking mat. Above all though enjoy it. You tube is your friend and any specific advice you need this thread is a goldmine. Some seriously good anglers on here.

Great place to start but river fishing is more difficult than stillwater imo because you have the flow (and eels) to contend with. Crack that and you'll probably always prefer rivers.

Well done mate. Effort=reward. I take it you didn't cheat and just go somewhere that actually has big perch in it? ;-)
I’m afraid I did. I caught this one and a good pike on the Norfolk Broads where I’m on holiday. Hell of a tale to tell too but I’ve only just got in. Having another crack at dawn after checking out of the cottage!
