Crude gear? You call that crude? I started with a cane, a bit of twine and a pigeon feather. I’m not sure how I got the bug cause I caught naff all on that set up. ;-)

I was the same. Started because I stayed at a B and B near Kendal as a nipper. Their was an old guy staying at the same time who fly fished and let me talk to him whilst he fished. There was a swing bridge near that you could stand on and watch the trout and salmon holding position in the current. That’s when I caught the bug. Once I moved to Richmond as a young teenager, that’s where I started and went a whole bloody year before I caught anything. A 3oz Grayling was stupid enough to come for a fly just as I recast and hooked itself. Boy was I proud. After that I learned to trot for Chub and Grayling, ledger for Barbel and fly fish for trout. Mr Crabtree was my teacher along with the odd angler who would pass on some wisdom. I had to lug gear a couple of miles from where we lived down to the Swale. Motorised carp trollys hadn’t been invented then unfortunately.

My first rod was split cane with a Mitchell 320, quill to line of about 4lb(Woolworths) straight to a 14s Mustad forged barbed hook to double maggot.
 
Talking of Hollingworth lake i took my mum there today for a drive out. A partial walk round lake with an ice-cream, very pleasant. Nobody on the lake fishing which surprised me. @Didsbury Dave. Not sure whether we've previously discussed fishing there mate but some real clonking pike in there. I have fished for them twice in winter several years ago and yep, I blanked: )
 
Loved reading the last few pages of this thread, made me think back to when I was a kid, fishing local ponds for rudd, bread as bait cos maggots were expensive. Crude tackle, getting a new rod for xmas and it being better than getting a new bike.
Getting a pig heart off the butcher and breeding maggots in the shed lol.
Making my own floats. My tackle box was made by tupperware.
A neighbour gave me a mitchell match (the one with the auto bail arm) and I thought it was the best thing ever. Also had an abu closed face which was awful, but I was billy big bollox with that.
When the carp bug bit later on, I made a barrow by converting a builders barrow, welding a frame to it. I took the back seats out of my sierra, and could push the barrow through the hatch fully loaded, up a home made ramp.
Hate to think how much ive spent on tackle and bait, well over 10k i'd imagine, but the memories are worth it.

Woolies, forgot that they used to sell tackle, cant remember the brand name they used to use? I remember it being really cheap, on account of the fact we used to nick it lol.
 
New terry hearn vid on you tube, "out of the blue" just started watching it.
Tel is a great angler, love his stuff.

Love this thread, especially at the moment cos of the memories it’s brought back.. You mentioning the maggot box my Dad used to have jogged my ol grey matter in a great way thanks ..
He used to have a green fibreglass rod he hated me using but I’d sneak out with it to fish Highams Park lake on the edge of Epping Forrest.. That must have forced my parents to by me a Shakespeare match set , a black rod I had for donkeys years before it broke..
Got hold of two Mitchell match reels, I still use the great little blue reels today .. Cheers men :)

I think I had that rod, was it the one with no cork handle and a clip reelseat? Memory is hazy. I'd forgotten the mitchell match was blue, i'm sure mine was black. Great reel.

It wasn't a cork handle, some sort of carbon & dare I say plastic :).. I'm going to do some research, see if I can find the exact rod. and it did have a clip reel seat

The memories are flooding back, who remembers swing tips for ledgering? They were cumbersome to say the least...
 
Just having a beer with my fishing mates and I've been told a few good places to try on my local river Tame. Not fished it for many years and it has little fishing pressure. Chub to 5lb perch to over 3lb and 2lb plus roach. My mates are not bullshitters so i need get on the banks and reel them in. I'd really love to catch a dog perch, just a matter of time now I have the heads up. Im gonna give it a go monday, bait apron and waders trotting a stickfloat.

Good shouit but looks like its discontinued - might lookfor one second hand on ebay. I get a lot of my stuff like that, except poles - dont generally trust second hand because of hidden damage / weak spots / repairs.

Might be the place for DD to end his perch quest?
 
I see a tributary of the Tay has had a landslide, turning the river brown.
Hopefully its gone through for next week and the grilse make an appearance.
