It's a funny thing about Steptoe. I'm old enough to have seen the very first seasons. It never made me laugh all that much. That's not a criticism. In fact, I'm not at all sure that it was supposed to make you laugh at all costs.
The pathos of it, though. Even as a child, I could pick that up. Those two, locked into a sort of prison with each other. Some episodes hit home hard. Does anyone remember the one where Harry Corbett picks up a girl and tries to make a proper girlfriend out of her? I can still remember that after more than fifty years. The father does absolutely everything he can to sabotage it, being as disgusting as possible, and he is of course successful. They're just sat at the end looking at each other gloomily, like two people sitting in the antechamber to hell. I think I almost cried at the time.
