This fella is still City's all-time leading goalscorer with 39 goals in one season to his name. Didn't see this mentioned elsewhere so thought it would be of interest to the older generation of posters who remember his playing days. Unfortunately I was not privledged enough to do so.

Nice to see Bernard "Mr. Manchester City" Halford getting stuck into his new role as honourary life president of which he is most deserving.

Great article.

I never saw him play but my parents told me he was a great player. He scored in the 55 Final and also the 56 I think.

I gather he was a character at City and very popular. The recent book on him was very good. No doubt Gary James can add a few interesting comments about him.

I heard the term 'beer an' chips' applied to Bobby J at one point, must have been towards the end of the fifties. He scored the second goal I ever saw at Maine Road, the second against Blackpool in Sept '55. One of those players who relied more on the pass and the shot than the shimmy and as far as I remember he never did a great deal of running!

wonder if he got a testimonial?

Shame the footage of these great, great players is so limited. Would love to watch a good few hours of legends like this playing for our great club.

Only played from 55-59. Wouldn't have come anywhere near a testimonial I wouldn't have thought.

Sure he scored 39 goals in a season? He's only down for 42 in total over the four seasons?

No he isn't. Different Johnson. The all time best City goalscorer in a season was Tommy Johnson in the 1920s.
<a class="postlink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Johnson_(footballer_born_1900" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_John ... _born_1900</a>)

Bobby was still a great City player though.

I went and watched him a few times when he was at Oldham...early 60's. Latics used to get a crowd of about 3000 t0 4000 in them days. The day Bobby made his debut there were 17000+ in Boundry park....lots of City fans in the crowd paying tribute to the true genius that he was. All the tricks and little flicks and lay offs were on display. Oh for some one here now who could take free kicks like him and make those through ball passes with that same accuracy....sorry to gush so but....he was a special player for every team he played for.

The little man was a genius. No more no less. The diving header against Newcastle in '55 in my mind was one of the best ever scored at Wembley.
Mind I was only 9 at the time so rose tinted glasses might be the case.
