Why is Top 4 the Holy Grail ? For me a TROPHY is the Holy Grail , what do you want to see , Tevez stood in the middle of COMS holding up a picture of the League Table above his head ? A copy of the Sun back page in the Trophy Cabinet ?
So we finish top 4 , whoop de doo ! We get to play Cluj , Zilina , Sparta Prague in front of 25000 wow ! Don`t fall into the Rags trap that the Chumps League is the be all and end all of everything , it`s an overhyped competition , full of a lot of crap teams like the afore mentioned , plus the big team cartel who like to make out it`s the only thing that matters . Sorry give me a TROPHY and Europa League next season rather than winning nowt again and Chumps League !
We can still finish 4th even if we lose Sat plus 5 or 6 more games , lose 1 in a Cup competition and that`s it , another chance gone :-(

Whilst there is an element of that I agree with, and it is sad how football now celebrates finishing 4th in the League more than winning the League Cup, if we did go all out for the League Cup and because of that lost a few more players along the way through injury, we'd finish outside the Top 4, Mancini would get sacked and we'd be starting all over again. He knows that so I understand his fear of picking important first teamers, especially in light of the current injury situation (now Micah and SWP are injured as well).

Our progress will not be measured by winning the League Cup and winning the League Cup will not register internationally with world class players. Messi will not join us because we finished 5th and won the League Cup, but he might have a little look if we finish 3rd and don't bag a trophy again (I'm dreaming but you get my point). Like it or not, Top 4 IS the be all and end all. I'm not saying I agree with it personally, but I'm not the one ploughing billions and billions of pounds into the club.

Look, I'd love to win a trophy, any fucking trophy, to get that particular monkey off our backs but when the dust settles, last night shouldn't really cause us too many sleepless nights.

Again, I caveat all that by saying it's easy for me to pontificate when I didn't spend my hard earned going last night.

To be fair if you had not gone to the game I am sure you wouldn't feel quite so bad about it all.

I feel for the many blues who made the trip however imo the Carling Cup is the lowest of interest to me hence me not making the trip down.

Something had to give and I am pretty confident there won't be too many people in the heirarchy at City shedding tears about last night's exit.

While what you say might be logical, unfortunately I have witnessed just about every cup defeat in the 35 years since we last won anything, and every season I genuinely think... "this is our season "!

Naive, I know, but I seriously thought we had a chance of winning something finally and getting that monkey off our backs.

And it's fine to say we can now concentrate on the other trophies, but football doesn't always work like that. You have to take your chances while you can, as while you plan for the bigger trophies, the ones we can win are slipping away.

But, yes, going last night was hugely disillusioning, and there were a lot of angry people after the match. I was one of them!

Like I say, I have always supported Mancini, but last night I felt I had been conned.

And if you believe that those in charge at City didn't really care aboiut losing last night, then I fear as to where we are heading if that is the case.

Can't you tell that I'm pissed off!

Yeah, I can see you're pissed and you have every right to be.

It's just that I had minimal interest in last night's game, and am sure I wasn't the only one, and it seems to sum up this competition.

In relation to your point about "where we are heading" then I think the answer to that one is the Champions League - I would quite happily keep the monkey on our back for a further year if I was offered a guarantee of top 4 now.

Can't disagree with any of that. I'm not that stupid that I don't realise that finishing top 4 is the be all and end all of our ambitions... and that the Carling Cup pales into insignificance in comparison.

However... during the summer we added six top quality players to a very strong squad, we were assured that we were "going for everything" and even this last week Mancini has repeatedly claimed that we were looking to win a trophy. I just think it's a missed opportinity.

While Messi might not be interested in the Carling Cup, 50,000 Blues at Wembley would be fucking made up about it!

It takes the pressure off the manager and the club, gives him breathing space to make his changes, convinces many of his doubters both within and outside the club... all positives.

But he's surrendered at the first hurdle.

After 5 league games I find it a bit hard to digest that we are "saving" players for the big games.

I take your point, logically you are right... it just doesn't feel good at the moment though.

Unfortunately, football still stirs the passions in me.. I thought I had grown out of it by now!

One was handed to him and one of them there was only Milan as their main challengers and he won it on the final season

I do like this quote on wiki

In his debut season (2004–2005) he won the club's first trophy in seven years – a 3–0 Coppa Italia win

So he goes all out for Inter but not for us

You do realise England is one of very few countries to have two domestic cup competitions? In Italy they only play in the Coppa Italia so basically it's the equivalant of the Fa Cup rather than the Carling Cup so a bit of a pointless post from you there
