had a conversation with a rag at 5 past 5 this morning, bear in mind this is a bloke i see all the time in work but have never had reason to speak to him or vice versa. we have never so much as let on before until this morning. also bear in mind that i'm an exiled manc living and working in hull.
as i approached, i was on a stand and ride pallet truck and he's stood with a lad i know who supports nobody but enjoys the banter about football.
him : mate, did you watch the real manchester club last night? class wasn't it
(these were the first words he's ever said to me so i let him have it)
me : do you know what irony means?
him : what?
me : do you understand irony? do you know what ironic means?
him : yes why?
me : do you see the irony in a hull lad asking a manchester lad did he watch a club not based in manchester, and referring to them as the real manchester club?
him : i don't know what you mean.
me : where do you stand on the green and yellow protest?
him : i couldn't give a f**k.
me : are you a real united fan 'cos you don't seem like one to me.
him : who are you to decide whether i'm a real united fan?
me : i'm a manc who supports his local team, and goes to watch them play regularly. i'm talking to a lad who claims to support a team 93 miles away from where he was brought up and doesn't care about the biggest protest the club has ever had. have you ever been to old trafford?
him : yes i have actually, at least 10 times, and i wear the shirt.
me : well f**king good for you. you haven't got a clue have you? do me a favour, don't bother ever talking to me again unless you've got something sensible to say.
usually i would try not to react to such a pleb but i was having a bad morning and it got my goat that he had never spoke before despite working at ours for about 18-24 months. long post but had to tell the great blue public of my despair. i swear that he said all this and i was so proud of my reasoned argument without resorting to mindless abuse.
