Boycott The Lass O'Gowrie Pub

I once went into The Bucket Of Blood boozer in Castleford when the Tigers were on the big screen in a Challenge Cup semi final. When I realised that a particularly poignant Beethoven violin sonata was being broadcast on Sky Arts at the same time I appealed to the better nature of the landlord and the 150 Castleford fans to switch channels to this cultural milestone pointing out how much better for their education and all round humanity it would be. When I was howled down and had beer thrown at me I had to resort to jumping up and down in front of the screen and waving my raincoat about whilst yelling the opening bars of the masterpiece at the top of my voice in order to make common sense prevail. I certainly made my point that day although my elbow replacement still clicks badly in wet weather.

Not surprised you fool! Beethoven was a bleedin' German. Had it been a programme about the sculptor Henry Moore I'm sure they would have been much more agreeable as he is a Castlefordian. A fact, I'm sure, most forum members already know.

I'm ashamed to admit it but I was in that night, and was one of the beer throwers, But in my defence if you had explained that it was the Kreutzer sonata, ( sonata number 9 ) with Isabelle Fauste and NOT Alexander Melnicov on lead violin you wouldn't have ended up in A & E. I,m sure you'll be glad to know that the landlord sky plussed it and we watched it after the game.

The very fact that the landlord has come on here at all, pretty much proves that he does value city fans supporting his pub. It's a nice pub, I don't go there that often but I'm not going to stop going completely now.

GAUDINO GAUDINO GAUDINO GAUDINO GAUDINO where have you gone? Why's it all gone quiet over there?

Gaudino left the building back on page seven with this ;

"Yadda yadda....whatever....won't lose sight that you went with a Scouse game over City in a Manc pub.....will leave it now.
Think we made our feelings clear, and have had a lot of emails from Blues outside our circle who back our boycott of the Lass.....end of debate for me...just will add that as an 'outsider' you have no grasp of how things are in Manchester re this kinda thing...hey ho, plenty of other pubs here..."

'Went with Scouse over City in Manc pub', 'as an outsider', 'no grasp of how things are' - probably best thing he did leave it at that ;-)

I own the bar next door but one to the Lass. We have several family businesses in a building that we've owned for decades. Charles Street is our spiritual home and, to us, the very heart of Manchester. The Lass are our long-time neighbours and friends.

I've met Gareth and his business partner. They are honourable gentlemen. I wish them well.

My manager Liam is from Cumbria and without the footballing bigotry of us Mancunians! He had several Liverpool fans in to watch their game on the night and, reasonably, assumed that most City fans interested in the match would be at COMS. We then got City fans in who watched God's Own Football Team once the relatively exciting end of the Liverpool game had finished, without complaint, as far as I am aware. We have an alternative big screeen (different signal) upstairs at Khan's Restaurant [where we now also get our food from).

We are obviously, and also, an independent business. That's why, above all else, we stand in solidarity with the Lass. Business is never perfect but no-one deliberately disrespects their customers. I am sorry that any fellow blues feel that way.

But life's unfair! I'd like RIC to allow a debate about the number one story in the world at present, but he's obviously worried about the lawyers. Hey, I am a commercial lawyer hearing every rent a mouth give their opinion endlessly on global media! But shit happens.

Lets get back to basics. They had the Liverpool game on in Manchester. Not Man City. If Man u were playing there’s no way Liverpool would have been on the Big Screen. Lass have accused the OP of bullying. His word against OP.What were 15 -20 Liverpool fans doing in a bar in Manchester on a Thursday night hogging the big screen? FO to wherever, and staff should cater for the local lads who go out around the town to watch the game whether City or Man U all season, its only one special day usually, it doesn’t take rocket science to get things in order. That should be their priority for that day. Landlords should surely acknowledge the immense following of both teams and the potential rewards of good courtesy and Public relations towards both sets of fans as regards their incoming profits.

The basics are:

Game did not seem to clash so what's the problem? Not answered so far.
There were more Liverpool fans hence more business.
Why would you switch it off for three customers who just come in?
It's a cosmopolitan part of town due to the locality of the universtity hence out of town fans.
There was another perfectly fine big screen.

The landlord has explained it all perfectly and there seems a lot of holes in the OP's story.

Lets leave the pub to the scousers then.

As an ex landlord i entirely sympathise with Gareth from the Lass. I am a big blue but when the rags were on the place used to be packed (i'd go but cant get a ticket brigade) shower of shite they were , BUT my takings used to at least double whilst the game was on. I was running my own business at the time and i was there to make filthy wonga from whomever came in , behaved themselves and spent .! So sorry those lads who want to boycott the Lass, but you biting your nose to spite your face . The Lass O'Gowrie is one of the most famous pubs in Manchester AND one of the best. Used to drink in there during the sixties when they had live 'groups' on and jamming nights. The atmosphere was out of this world. I for one am glad to see its still going strong.
I am still in the trade as a manager now and continuously have the same problem of what game to show. I use the 'who is spending most' method. Sorry.
