He's not going to start immediately at Real, which probably means he's not expecting to start every week here either, doesn't it?
Real have a fantastic recent record with youth though, they're probably the team that does best the kind of thing we want to do.
I said a few pages back that the problem we have is multi-faceted in that not only do we not bring kids through normally, straight from the EDS, but none of the kids who go on loan ever get a chance when they come back either. So if you're Brahim, why would you sign a new deal and go on loan? Maffeo did as well as any kid could ever be expected to do on loan, and he did't get any closer to the first team.
Not only do Real Madrid have a bunch of academy players in the first team in Carvajal, Nacho, Lucas Vazquez, Marcos Llorente and Mariano Diaz, but they've got a great record in getting in young 18-20 year old players and bringing them through after a loan or a season halfway between Castilla and the first team.
Players like Casemiro, Vallejo & Asensio came into the team that way - brought in cheap, loaned and then brought into the first team. Mariano Diaz, Llorente and Carvajal all came back after loans too.
If you're Brahim, you can look those players and think that a loan season is a genuine stepping stone to the first team, which it's not here (at the moment anyway).
And where is Maffeo now? Not even first choice at Stuggart who are last in Germany. Started their last two games in which they lost both 4-0 and Maffeo was also subbed off in both.
Maybe we don’t have a good record with youngsters because our youngsters have never been good enough? If Angelino was good enough he would of succeeded Clichy but he clearly wasn’t. Unal and Kelechi aren’t exactly scoring boatloads. Where is Denis Suárez he seemed to play a little for Barca but disappeared recently. Rony Lopes began to shine last season but he’s now injured. Roberts? A.Garcia? Douglas? Aren’t exactly earning great reviews at Girona are there? The list goes on and on.The kids are frequently over rated due to the burning desire to have academy players succeed in the first team.
Foden looks the part but I haven’t been overly impressed with Brahim to be honest, showed many moments of magic but the overall gameplay was lacking. He needs more chances but he needs to show something when he does get them.
Caravajal is one of the best RBs in the world as is Casemiro as DM. Asensio is one of Spain’s biggest talents and every chance he got for Real he took with both hands. How many debuts did he score wonder goals on?
There’s a huge difference between the quality of these youngsters and ours.
Nacho? He’s 28 and only started play frequently for Real 2 seasons ago...
Llorente? He’s 23. Went on loan to Alaves and played almost every game. Came back to Real last season and started 5 games. No starts this year yet.
Vallejo? Soon to be 22. Went on loan for few seasons and came back to Real last season. Starting 7 matches in total. Now is injured.
Sorry but I wouldn’t call this a “fantastic recent record with youth.”
We’ve not been as bad with our youth as many believe. I agree we should be giving them more chances especially when the game is won and so on. But Sancho looks like he may be the only one that got away. Although it’s still too early to say if he will ever even match Sane, Sterling or Mahrez let anyone be better than them. As opposed to Foden where I feel he’s already almost at Gundogan’s level and will surpass him probably this season.
Icardi a £100m striker was at Barca’s academy. Do they miss him? I highly doubt it. They have Suárez who has been the superior player for years. That’s the way top clubs look at it imo.
