British Justice ... it sucks in this instance.

According to Dirty Harry's logic then, burglaries should be far less common in the good ol' US of A as the perpetrator is risking his life by breaking in to a property where the occupier might well be armed.

But that's not borne out by the stats. Reported burglaries in the USA are about 700 per 100,000 people. In the UK, it's about 500/100,000. So it's lower here anyway but burglary is defined quite differently in the 2 countries and is much wider in the UK, where even an unsuccessful attempt to enter a property with intent to steal is classed as a burglary. About 40% of these actually involve entry to a property resulting in a theft, which is the US definition. That means that the equivalent figures in the UK are around 200/100,000. Doesn't seem like facing an armed householder is much of a deterrent then.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.copinthehood.com/2011/09/burglary-in-uk.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.copinthehood.com/2011/09/burglary-in-uk.html</a>

And naturally the murder rate is about 5 times higher in the USA, as any gun owner (or someone with access to a weapon owned by someone else) with a grievance can walk into a school, college or workplace and blaze away to their heart's content.

The average Guardian reader could buy and sell you in the brains department, which I accept wouldn't be difficult.
In fact only a really stupid person would conclude that reading possibly the only decent daily newspaper we have renders you a 'dickhead'.
So well done you.

You're delude absolutely deluded,
I couldn't agree more. I can't believe he excluded The Times.

Never the same after 2003 when it dumbed down by going tabloid to attract the hard-of-thinking oik, mate.

You've got to move with The Times, mate.

An appeal could actually take longer to come to Court again, than the actual and possible release from prison early with tag being worn. Therefore Anthony has decided against any appeal and just wants in and out as quickly as possible.

Or, of course, he may have been advised an appeal could well lead to an increased sentence...

Thats why he daren`t go for an appeal, even though he he did not use a bottle/glass.He just wants to put this sorry episode behind him,get his head down and move to another house.

I'm sorry oakie, but if I had genuinely been wrongly convicted, then I would fight tooth and nail to have that conviction quashed, regardless of how long it took, and how much it cost.
And if I had a reasonable cause for appeal, then any half-decent brief would accept my case.
I know he's your mate, and your loyalty is admirable, but I can't help but think that there may well be more to this than meets the eye, and that he may have given you a version of events that doesn't entirely match what transpired.
On another note, I apologise for my part in hijacking the thread by responding to some deranged sherman who seems hell bent on telling us just how safe guns make society.

I know what you mean ref the appeal (even though he is innocent of using a bottle/glass) but it could actually work out worse for him, with a possible increase in the sentence. If he keeps his head down whilst serving he could be out before Christmas.
As I`ve said on many occasion he admits to the assault but NOT the use of a bottle/glass,even though he admitted using his head, which is also classified as a "weapon".
Delighted for him regarding the MD where he works, telling his wife that his job will remain open irrespective of the length of time he has to serve.
Don`t worry about the "gun saga" mate as I definately aint a believer in guns to protect yourself.

The missing 'd', missing comma and comma where there should be a full stop suggest that you don't read it yourself.

Shouldn't there be a comma after the word comma in your post?

No because it's the second thing in a list of three. The fact that the word 'and' follows the word 'comma' means that I win again.

Kev is correct, drone. Kev's grammar and spelling is usually spot on.

Have you considered deploying smileys at the end of your jokes more frequently, as many often struggle to appreciate their underlying sentiment?

Deploying '****' at the same point has much the same effect

It was grammar being treated as a joke that landed this once great nation in the mess we currently find ourselves in. We'll end up like the USA if we're not careful.

With people routinely using expressions like "it sucks", you mean?

Just look to the left where it lists the username. I shouldn't need smileys.

Exactly. Using expressions like "it sucks", starting a thread with the word "so" and describing the start of something as "the get go" seem perfectly acceptable to our moderating team but if I post a picture of the nation's favourite with her breasts on display, all hell breaks loose and I invite the perma-ban hammer upon myself.
