Britney Spears

He had full control of her personal life and argued it was better for her mental health to not have more children ,she could have been sectioned if she didnt agree , she was fitted with a coil, he had totally control over her life , i would say he was happy to make her work and do do tours so a baby would get in the way , it is a horrifing situation she was in , the legal documents and details were appalling
It amazes me that this sort of thing can happen. It almost makes you think that being sectioned would be better, because then at least it would be professional doctors in control rather than some controlling, abusive family member.

I recently read about the Kennedy's sister who was lobotomized simply because she was difficult to deal with. I wonder if women are more likely than men to be under these sorts of arrangements. I saw a disabled campaigner talking about it on the news, and so I imagine disabled people are also likely to find themselves in this situation.

What's happened to Britney is bullshit.

At the same time, she's - IMO - clearly unstable. I'm happy for her that she's no longer a slave to "conservatorship" - at the same time, I fear for her safety. I don't wish to be morbid... but IMO, I think she's 50-50 to die within the next 10 years or so due to overdose, suicide, or being around the wrong sorts of people.

Struth - doesn't even sound legal.........

Good point, in the past that was certainly the case I think wives of wealthy men being wheeled into the looney bin, because they wouldn't submit to the will of their "master".

Depends on the system and personnel in the hospital, when I was hospitalised during the entry interview the nurse made assumptions that my psychosis was due to drugs "you know why you're here, don't you, because of drugs". I have never been a recreational user of drugs or had substance issues.

Now I don't doubt that lots of people who have abused drugs and medical professionals get compassion fatigue but she had no place saying that.

A girl who was there told me she found broken glass in the garden and self-harmed with it. That's another thing... Not necessarily a good situation if you end up with 3-4 self-harmers (which will happen often because women are more likely to SH and more likely to be hospitalised) because they encourage each other just by being of likemind.

Drugs are still used to idiot people out and "manage behaviour" not just therapeutic reasons.

That is awful mate and there is certainly a case where nursing staff judge people but even if you were there due to drug addiction/abuse you are still human and deserve compassion and understanding. No one knows someone’s story unless they ask, people don’t set out in life to abuse drugs.

Very good post. I agree.

She is an incredibly vulnerable person.

As you say, I don’t want to sound morbid, but I don’t see this having a happy ending.

Well you'd hope that the court have based in on facts rather than emotion.

Having said that, if she's failed to get better after 13 years of the current arrangements, then you have to wonder what use they've been. From what I've read, the conservatorship was supposed to be temporary, and yet it's lasted 13 years throughout which she released four albums and did four multi-date tours. Her 2009 tour had 97 dates and grossed nearly $200m, yet you'd assume that given that it was just 1 year into a 13 year conservatorship, that would have been when she was most vulnerable. But she wasn't being sent to rehab or to mental health specialists, she was being asked to fly around the world performing while someone else was able to control all of the resulting profits.

Her father allegedly gave himself a cut of deals that he signed on her behalf in addition to $16k a month plus expenses salary. She alleges that she was forced to go on tour, and is now suing her father for conservatorship abuse. It seems like her father was basically happy to use her as a cash cow and had very little interest in her getting better.

If someone is a drug addict and has other mental health issues to the point that they need this sort of arrangement, then you put it in place to give them the time to get the help they need. You don't put it in place and then carry on as normal raking in the cash. Sick people shouldn't be going on 97 date tours, they should be in a hospital. But then $200m and complete control over a valuable pop star is pretty tempting.

Brilliant post. I don’t have a lot of confidence in the American judicial system mind.

Agreed. And ironically she was conducting a questionnaire at the time.

I believe the better and more caring psychiatric nurses eventually move onto jobs in the community out patient care, but those who are more detached stick around in the wards longer because the stress of the job doesn't affect them as much.

She's an absolute fruitcake. Needs protecting from herself. Going one way this and it's not going to be good.
