Bundesliga review part 2. the new one :)

Embarassing fact of yesterday´s start to the Champions League group stages...Wolfsburg managed to get an attendance of 20200 people for their first CL match since ages. And thats as the current League runner up/Cup Winner.

At the same time the 3rd division match between Osnabrück and Magdeburg got a similar attendance.

Maybe people can now understand why a lot of people in Germany cant stand the likes of Leverkusen, Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg etc....

They are just an embarassment for German football and I dont want them to even remotely represent German fan culture in Europe.
 
Even worse, their attendance included 1,000 free tickets for refugees. And the match in League 3 took place in Magdeburg, which is 45 minutes down the Autobahn from Wolfsburg. Recently Wolfsburg managers announced to take action against season ticket holders, who just buy cheap season tickets to see matches against Bayern or Dortmund, but never turn up for the rest of the season, so that the ground always look half empty. And their match vs. Ingolstadt last weekend had the lowest number of viewers watching on Sky so far this season.

Sorry to disappoint you Alex, but I've never seen FC Koln lose at home, and I'm attending their next two home games.
 
Okay, my 8 games in 13 days starts tomorrow, so I might as well try some predictions.

Bochum 3 Fortuna 1 (Top v bottom, but secretly hoping for a sneaky away win)
Koln 2 Monchengladbach 1 (Looking forward to a feisty local derby)
Duisburg 0 FSV Frankfurt 1 (don't know much about these teams, but then again, I've never seen a blue Zebra)
Bielefeld 2 Bochum (I've got a feeling the wheels will come off for Bochum)
Leverkusen 3 Mainz 0 ( Hopefully that clown from the swamp won't score)
Koln 3 Ingolstadt 1 (Sorry Alex)
Hamburg 2 Schalke 2 (Slow, but gradual improvement for the Red shorts)

Fly home Sunday
Wash clothes
Return midweek

Monchengladbach 0 City 3 (Revenge for 79)

I do not think the attendance in Wolfsburg is so embarassing when you look into the fan structure. Maybe the Bundesliga saturdays are family events - the midweek matches are more events for that typical male football fan. The hardcore Wolfsburg fan is the worker in the Volkswagen factory or in one of the many companies of the business that surround Wolfsburg. This companies work a three shift system - the shifts starting at about 6 a.m., 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.
The only guys that like this can go to the matches without taking holidays are the ones in the morning shift - and even there night will be just one with max. 5 hours sleep.

Not all of the fans - and I can understand it, too - are hardcore fans that will take holidays for a group stage match against ZSKA Moscow...

The match next week on Tuesday night against Bayern is sold out. But that is a decisive cup match - and the opponent is more attractive...

The mighty Dortmund did not sell out their stadium yesterday either.

Good win for us today and another clean sheet, 4 in a row now which is unprecedented for Wolfsburg. Massive week and half coming up with Bayern away midweek and then Man Utd the week after. On the fan issue, it wasn't great to see so many empty seats, makes me wish I lived in Wolfsburg, or at least had the money to go over regularly. But if you look at the % of the stadium that was full it wasn't close to beimg the worst in the champions league.

Some interesting stuff going on yesterday...results were not so interesting (f*$% you Alex!!) ;)

As you might know the big Rhein Derby between Gladbach and Köln was on. Last season when Köln was playing in Gladbach there was this silly pitch invasion by Köln fans which once more sparked the security issue debate in Germany. As a result Gladbach didnt get the full amount of tickets for the derby yesterday and the tickets were personalised.

Obviously Gladbach fans were not amused and the majority of them didnt attend the match as protest, instead they just showed a banner in the empty away section "Is this what you want?".

Köln fans joined the protest and there were no flags/banners and no organized support in the home section. Köln won 1-0 and Gladbach really is in trouble now with 0 points after 5 match days.

In addition to that there was a huge debate going on in Germany about football clubs showing their support for refugees. As a sign of solidarity all players were supposed to wear a special "refugees welcome" badge. Now the biggest tabloid in Germany, the dreaded "Bild", jumped the bandwagon and got their logo on the badge.

However Bild in the past was notorious for their anti refugees campaign, but now that the general attitude in Germany is more welcoming towards refugees they jumped the Bandwagon as well.

This was followed by massive protests of all fan scenes in Germany and resulted in the #BildNotWelcome hashtag and banners everywhere.

A couple of clubs like Union Berlin and St.Pauli even completely refused to play with the badge as long as the Bild logo is on it. This then resulted in Bild reporters claiming that refugees are not welcome at the Millerntor in St.Pauli which is absolutely silly as their fanscene is know for sponsoring season tickets for refugees etc. since years.

Bild was already despised by the majority of football fans over here for their shit stirring and bullshit news about football "riots" and whatnot, and now they are really in trouble.

So just in case you come across the #BildNotWelcome banners on TV, this is what it is all about.
 
I think its the same team that brought a massive support of 185 people to Bremen as well! ;)

Anyway, job well done so far...going to be interesting to see if Ingolstadt will have a drop in form anytime soon like Paderborn had last season.

You actually believe that a new guy would be better for us?
The guy's been the best thing that happened to us for over 20 years and there's really no one out there I could see doing anything close to that job.
It's also a terrible timing(seems like Favre wanted to leave during the summer already and about twenty times during his tenure with us) cause there aren't many guys out there at a time like this.

Though, maybe the team needs a new voice and we'll most likely play you guys with Andre Schubert(coach of the reserves and formerly of Paderborn and St. Pauli) as the manager.

I think he means the usual euphoria that follows a new appointment; under Favre there didn't seem to be any end to the turmoil at the moment. The players will lift themselves for a new manager.

I keep having that same thought about Paderborn; but I think our squad has a lot more than there's did, mind. Decent away support for that distance for such a 'small' team ;)

Not seen you on here before - welcome to the forum. Nice to have another clubs perspective (although @Rhineland might not agree).

When a club gets a new manager, you often see the players put in more effort to impress so they can stake a claim for their spot in the first eleven. I'm just wary of that from a selfish point of view for our game next week.

I realise he's been great for you, and the next guy will have to do very well to fill his shoes - the expectations will be huge and Favre had done wonders to take you from relegation certainties to the champions league. Shame he has left in these circumstances.

Who do the fans want?

Haha, it's probably easier to take with Cologne's win against Mönchengladbach last weekend and even more with their unexpected current winning streak :-). So I do agree very much, always good to have fans from various clubs on here even if they're fans from bitter rivals. Ruhr, Bembeltown and others coped well when I joined this forum, though there's not much love lost between their clubs and Cologne either. Even with all the hatred and rivalry, there's still some respect and understanding underneath between us "Traditionsvereine"-fans. Not sure what to make out of those glory-hunting Schanzer-fans, mind ;-)
