I am looking to buy a laptop. I don't need anything special as I only need it for the following:

Storing videos from a camcorder
Storing photos (although most of these will be stored in the 'cloud')
Occasional Internet use

We're leaking money at the moment as we are having extensive building works carried on the house, so I don't want to spend much. I just want something fairly quick and can deliver the above.

Any reecommendations? Any manafacturer I should avoid? Any manafacturers who are particularly good?

Home videos eh?

Always found Toshibas pretty decent for the money. Any model with the i5 processor will be more than enough for what you'll be using it for.

Bought Packard Bell from Tesco online just over 2 years ago, similar use as what you want, watching xbmc, surfing net, saving photos to cloud - never had an issue with it

Acer's are good,i have 2 aspire one's with no probs
Prices start from about £175 i think for the smaller size but the larger ones are a good price too

Acer's don't tend to like heavy use and don't last very long.

I use my small one all day and the bigger one for football,i must have got lucky so far then

I now buy all my computers from Novatech. The website is novatech.co.uk. Their computers do not contain any of the usual trial programmes and bloatware that infect pretty much all other new computers. The inital price quoted does not include an operating system and you have the choice of Windows 7 or 8. Their staff are very helpful and they provide lifetime free technical support.

Or we've been unlucky. We've had three. Mrs stony has had two, and my lad has had one. First one lasted 3 years which prompted me to replace it with the same and buy my lad one. His lasted a year and the wifes lasted about 18 months.
I replaced hers with the cheapest Del I could find and its been ok so far(over 3 years)

Presuming you are looking at buying a laptop with Windows as the operating system. Microsoft will be offering a free upgrade of Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10. With this in mind it might be worth looking that the laptop you buy has the following specification.

1GHz processor or above
At least 1GB Ram (2GB for 64-version)
20GB spare hard drive space

I would not suggest upgrading straight away - leave it say 6 months after the launch of the free Windows 10 offer - for them to fix the bugs, and for other software suppliers to ensure their software is fully compatible with the new Windows 10. Hope this helps.
