We're looking at doing this from Sydney to Adelaide, followed by Christchurch to Auckland. Does anyone have any experience of renting camper vans, tips, places to go/avoid? Good rental companies and places to stay?

Did this in new zealand, we just bought one in Christchurch, then sold it when we left.
Make sure you dont buy one that fails its W.O.F (kiwi M.O.T) and have to sell it for $30 though, and then go to the casino and put the $30 on red 23 and lose.
only idiots would do that

Did Brisbane to Cairns up the Bruce Highway 2 years ago. Wonderful trip, booked the first 2 camp sites before we left UK but found there was always room on a site so no need to book in advance (although I was told it get busy during their school hols). Hired a van with http://www.apollocamper.com/ and would recommend them. We had a VW van conversion which was fine (plus they upgraded us to the 'luxury' version for free) 2 berth with telly, shower, toilet etc) but if I did it again would go for something a bit more off road and basic such as their Landcruiser conversion.

We did 2 weeks on the road and then flew to Sydney for a week in a hotel. On reflection should have done the whole holiday in the van, as it was a lot of driving and Sydney really hasn't got a week's worth of holiday in it in my opinion. Next time would do 3 months if we could afford it, allowing for longer stops along the way.

We did Adelaide to Perth, but didn't hire a campervan. We did a relocation instead. I'm not sure whether it's still possible to do, but worth looking into if you have time for other road trips.
The campervan company who needed the 6 berther taking back to Perth required a deposit and paid a sizable chunk of petrol money, and gave a 4 day time limit to deliver it. Once we got there, we got our deposit back because we looked after it, so only really paid for petrol.

why did you back a red?

I did the backpackers route in 1991/92 and from Alice Springs for about 2 weeks travelled with this Austrian bloke and he had bought an estate car so we travelled in the day and kipped in the back at night. Went up to Cairns and then down to Surfers Paradise when he went a different route as I went back to Sydney (I was working halfway between Sydney and Canberra in a place near Bowral)
