In my own view, not usually, to put my point across some of the best managers didnt have Glittering careers as footballers, our very own Sven, retired early as a player but is a top manager.
Mourinho not a good player, in fact gave it up but was schooled by Sir Bobby Robson, who him self didnt win any trophies as a player but did well as a manager,
Wenger again an adverage player and short career as a player, but an excellent manager,
dare i say this...... Bacon face himself , an adverage player but as a manager...he settled in well, i seem to remember they wanted to get rid of him after a season..

As i said just my opinion and something to think about when considering Looking for a New Quality manager.

I think because you where one doesn't mean you automatically are the other, but also doesn't rule it out. Look at City you could argue that the best player we have had for manager was Alan Ball over the last 30 years but where would he rank on that list as our manager(my guess would be clearly bottom).

I dont think there is any form or correlation with playing ability. In any walk of life, you maybe really good 'hands on' but when it comes to putting the tools down, you might not cope with the admin, paperwork or politics. Remember CLive Woodwards dabble in 'soccer'. He was ridiculed for not being a football man - although he clearly new how to manage high end sportsmen; if his name was Claudio Woodino, he'd probably been hailed a genius and allowed to get on with it.

Busby, Mercer, Dalgliesh, Beckanbauer, Cruyff, Shankly, Paisley, Clough etc etc

Plus of course Peter Reid.

these guys scared the shit out of their players and got their respect to boot.
i cant see a manager these days treating a player like those you have mentioned.
