This was taken from the letters pages on the Manchester Evening News, posted by a red.

"I don't think it is getting closer. As clubs we're becoming further and further apart: United had seven homegrown players starting, if you include Rooney, whereas city had one. You're almost Blackburn in the Jack Walker era and United are...... "

Can somebody tell me who these are, i know there was neville, scholes and rooney who are English, but i cannot work out who the rest were.

Giggs is more of a Salford boy than Welsh. He's originally from Wales but grew up in Salford, and played for Salford boys.

Fletcher is Scottish.
Evans Irish.

I'm guessing he's including Giggs. And Blackburn under Walker had plenty of English players. If he's counting Rooney as home grown then they can say they had Sherwood, Batty, Shearer, Sutton, Ripley, Ian Pearce, Atkins, Flowers, Le Saux, Wilcox, Newell and probably others I have forgotten. Typical know-nothing rag trying to change history to suit an agenda.

Rags have a history of distorting facts in order to fit the argument. They think that Stretford is part of Manchester, so they might think that Norris Green, Liverpool 11, is part of Stretford. They might include those players for whom they didn't pay £30m or so.

Giggs played for Dean FC as a youngster (Dean FC were managed by a City coach) he was recommended to us and signed into our 'school of excellence' and was a city player.

While playing for Deans, Giggs would be watched regularly by local newsagent and Old Trafford steward Harold Wood. Wood regularly told the senior staff at Manchester United about Giggs, but they did not send anyone down to watch him until Wood spoke personally to Alex Ferguson. Wood told the United boss, "He's with City at the moment, and if you lose him you'll regret it". So Ferguson sent a scout to a Deans match, who was impressed enough for the RAGS to offer Giggs a trial over the 1986 Christmas period. Prior to the trial, Giggs played in a match for Salford Boys against a United Under-15s side at The Cliff and scored a hat trick, with Ferguson watching from his office window. On 29 November 1987 (his 14th birthday), Ferguson turned up at Giggs's house with United scout Joe Brown and offered him two years on associate schoolboy forms. They offered to waive YTS forms, and persuaded Giggs to sign by offering the opportunity to turn professional in three years. Giggs signed there and then.

Homegrown players that are coming to the end of their career. They'll have to bring in players from foreign countries because England doesn't seem to producing a lot of talent.

You may as well include Bridge, Bellamy and Barry as well if this dickhead wants to include a player they bought from someone else.
