Can you have a favourite player

If you've never seen them in the flesh?

Like for example, I'm 27 and I never got to watch the likes of Colin the King or Franny Lee, Summerbee, Peter Barnes etc but I know from the stories my dad has told me and from old clips that they were class.

I wouldn't however consider any of them to be my favourite City player of all time.

The reason I ask is because there's a rag at my work who is the same age as me and is a stereotypical plastic who insists that his favourite player of all time for the scum is George Best.

mine was always mike doyle after reading his book.

as a kid it was kinkladze from a young age then.... weaver, dickov and goater.

and now it's a toss up between our beautiful whole first team squad!

Mike Doyle used to do the football coaching at my school when I was younger. It was quite shit in retrospect, he used to just run about with the ball at his feet with like 30 children chasing him. Was still a laugh and got quite sad when he died.

I've had a few idols in the past like Rodney Marsh, Mike Summerbee and Dennis Tueart. Vincent Kompany is my current favourite, an incredible defender and great man.

For me, no. How can they be your favorite player if you haven't seen them play at all live, and weren't even alive when they were playing? Sounds stupid to me.

For the record early on in the season Dzeko was my favorite player before his poor form. Now it could be any out of 4 or 5 players. Vinny probably edges it slightly. We have so many likeable players!

I personally wouldnt, but then again i'm not sure why.
I would accept someone of my young age stating their favourite band/singer is someone that they've never seen - beatles/stones/zeppelin etc.
they werent even alive when they were around (well, in the stones case, when they were in their prime at least). Yet they heard their music and loved them, just as you could argue you could have an old-time great as a favourite footballer just because you've watched multiple times in action on old videos and stuff.

makes sense i guess
