Can't seem to let the Villa thing go.

The CL is where Villa along with us, Everton and Spurs aspire to be. Villa have made the best go of this since Everton a few years back. Their progression as a football team will be improved by their participation in the CL not ot mention the financial aspect and from what I've seen of their owner he will probably plough most (it not all) back into the team. The funny bit is they kicked their season of early in the Intertoto cup to enable them to get into the UEFA and that will probably cost them in the long run.

The stupid Villa thing is still bewildering. Can someone explain their mentality because I am still not getting it. Why is a fourth place finish more important than winning the Uefa Cup? It was their only realistic chance of silverware for this season and probably for seasons to come. Even if they qualify for the Chumps League, WTF is making them think that they can look forward to anything better than a swift and humiliating exit? They'll be out of it this side of Christmas, FFS, because they haven't got what it takes to compete against the top European teams and short of a sudden and massive injection of funds from wealthy Arabs, absolutely nothing will ever come of the CL for the likes of Villa. The Chumps League has more significance for us than it will ever have for them because we have the financial resources to make an impression on the competition whereas they clearly have not. I can understand what Spurs did because of the relegation issue (although they are deluding themselves if they think the Carling Cup carries more prestige than the Uefa Cup does) but only a wanker would do what O'Neill has done this week. He's not a dunce so I don't understand why its happened,

I seem to be annoyed about this. Is there anyone out there at all that thinks Villa have got this one right?
Martin O'Neil sees the players every day. he must have judged that their resources were stretched to breaking point, and the prize of Champions League football is a big prize

He's sacrificed the UEFA Cup for points in the League. Might be worth it, if he felt that his squad was not fresh enough to compete on two fronts

We'll see the impact of two European games, and a game at Liverpool in quick succession at Upton Park this weekend. Offset to an extent by increase in confidence

Every season you get managers involved in European campaigns going on about how difficult they found coming back to the Premiership games after a European mid-week game.

Hughes and Bowen talked about the advantage that their European campaigns with Blackburn would bring to City

It was a performance in a UEFA cup game that began this little confidence renaissance of ours though. O'Neil has put himself under pressure now, if he doesn't win this weekend I'm sure some stick will be coming his way, it'll be interesting to see how he copes with it as well.

Clubs spend all season trying to get into Europe ,then at the first sniff of Silverware knock it on the head BIZZARE

Villa have only used 19 players all season in the Premier League. If they're aiming to be in the Champions League, they're going to need those same 19 players to be playing in both competitions to make a decent fist of it. Not a chance. They need to drastically deepen their squad over the summer IF they finish in the top 4.

Sure, that's definitely true. But don't you think that that's exactly what they will do? Their owner has fronted up cash-wise so far, and I think he will again if they get that 3rd or 4th spot.

But if they are 4th and the Arse win the CL from 5th place, Villa are going to look a bit stupid, as it will be the EUFA Cup (or whatever its new name is) again in that case, not the CL. :0)

Because the Champions League is worth about 10 times the revenue of the UEFA Cup. If they get Champions League they get more prestige, more money to spend on players, and can progress the club. Winning the UEFA Cup isn't that great.
