Still alive here....
Phoned up diamond insurance to swap insurance onto new car. Was quoted almost 3 times more (800) than existing price that was renewed last month. Told them to forget it and cancel. No problem, except the £50 admin fee. When questioned, diamond came out with the old, "well insurance has gone up," bollox.

Quick search found almost every other quote at least half the price and 4 were cheaper than the old price we paid (325).

Bastards.

I've been quoted £700 for my mum's insurance renewal with 1st Choice even though it was less than half that when i originally took it out for her. Went on MoneySupermarket and got quotes less than £200 considering she has 17yrs no claims. Same as you, on the bottom of their renewal form it said "Our final thoughts… Insurance Premium Tax has increased again and affects all car insurance quotes. It’s out of our hands and whilst you could try cycling (we tried…didn’t have the stamina), it might help to know that we’ve added extra cover to make up for it. ". Well it's pretty amazing that the other insurers got £500 cheaper than you lot, then.

I’m waiting on my renewal from these as well. I’m expecting a similar attempt at a hike in price.

Buy a runaround for £300, shop around, put every extra down to the minimum - excess, mileage etc - then let them fight it out when you have an accident.
P.S. I've had 'accidents' when I've not even been in the car (parked up) and my insurance has gone up £25 a year for 4 years because I'm a risk (they didn't even ask where I was parked at the time).
Fuck em, it's a scam.

Bastards the lot of them.

I used to get a renewal quote of Amiral each year for about £200 more than I used to pay. They used the insurance premium increase excuse each time on the letter.

Used to compare the meerkat and find the same quote with them every time at least £300 less than what they quoted me if I was a new customer. Used to ring them up and they used to knock more off blaming a system error and some compo. Worked until last year when they wouldn’t budge.

Fucked them off for esure which were £300 less than their quote

Like others have said, they prey on people not changing them. My grandad did It for years, until now we do quotes for him and save hundreds each year.

Agree that most insurance companies are twats. A lot offer an introductory discount, which automatically results in a big price hike at renewal. They hope you can’t be arsed to shop around.

Can’t guarantee it will work for you but try LV, folks. (Not sure if they subscribe to the comparison sites.) I’ve been with them a few years, check the market every renewal and still find them competitive.

I had the renewal letter last week and then I had an email pop up the other day from confused.com that was £30 cheaper with the exact same firm (I didnt do a search, they just emailed me). Rang them up today and they honoured it. What's the point in all the hassle of ringing them up and going through it with them? Betting on me being an idle bastard I suppose, a try on
