i know there are a few carpetiers here in BM.

I'm planning to recarpet one room in the house. It is around 10'x17' give or take.

How much would the whole job be of taking the carpet out and putting new mid thickness carpet in complete with new underlay and grippers?

I assume you live in the UK , but down here ( Oz ) it would be between $500 - $1500.
It's a bit like do you want a Skoda or a Merc?
