Well, we still have laws re sedition in this country but I hope we'd never impose those kind of sentences on anyone illegally organising a referendum. Perhaps the Catalans unilateral declaration of independence after the vote was a strategic error that gave the Spanish government an excuse to come down hard on them?Seems heavy but I assume there we existing laws in regards to this and the government haven’t just made it up as they went along?

The EU criticised for taking away domestic sovereignty and then criticised for not using that extra leverage to stop an anti-democratic action in one of its member countries.
It's almost as if the EU don't really care about domestic sovereignty beyond how it can serve their goals as a federated state or something. Weird.
