I don’t think it’s necessarily the players we’ve brought in that’s been our undoing. After all, we’ve just won 4 in a row!
It’s more the fact that the spine of our side has completely gone at the same time. I’d class Ederson, Stones, Dias, Walker, Rodri, KDB and Haaland as our spine. They’re the ones who when fully fit, start in their favoured position.
A mixture of bad luck with injuries, poor squad depth and a sudden loss of legs (Walker and KDB) have contributed to this.
Of course, we can sit here and say the club should have cashed in on Walker and KDB in the summer. Or brought in an understudy for Rodri. But hindsight is a wonderful thing. Kovacic would have been a fine deputy for Rodri if we had a fit KDB and Walker (from last season) regularly playing. Likewise, spending the £80+ million required to get a stand in for Rodri would have been considered a waste of money if Rodri remained fit. A drop off was always going to happen, this perfect storm to our spine has just made it far worse.
The good news is we’re still in with a chance of finishing in the top 4, reaching the latter stages of the CL and a rebuild is around the corner. If we bring in someone like Ederson and Robinson to add some much needed mobility to the side in Jan, I still wouldn’t rule out this being a successful season.
