Catastrophic transfers are killing us.

A few posts from the Juventus post match thread

The main issue, even if everyone was fit, is that there are players who are well past their best and others who will never be good enough for an elite team

Whilst there is some truth in that, our system would hide that. At the moment, the structure is hanging them out to dry.

There’s no one to replace them though as they’re all injured.

No mate
We're at least five players short of being contenders again and that's just for the first eleven

Sick of people acting like Gundogan was some huge blunder by the club.

We got him on a free because Barca didn't want him. We didn't pass on fucking Musiala or Wirtz to sign him.

Also, we all saw Palmer at City. Anyone who says they knew he would have broken out like this for City is full of shit. He was never going to get games at attacking mid.

Transfers haven't killed us. We have a lot of raw young players who haven't rounded out their game yet, a lot of veterans who are aging out and realistically are at the end of the line at City, and a giant fucking list of injuries. The transfer policy hasn't been great the last 2 years, but it hasn't killed us because we arent fucking dead.

No we probably wouldn't have won the league anyway this year, but being 7th in December after 14 straight years of making the Champions League (a streak that NOBODY in the Prem comes close to) has got some of you standing on the ledge looking for anything and everything to pin it on, looking for someone to sell or someone to sack. Its December, there's a lot of football left.
It's a mixture of a lot of things that have all hit at the same time and transfers is one of them. People will generally discuss a great team falling off a cliff on a football forum about that team.

I always thought and still do believe that Palmer has a higher ceiling than Foden
Whether he would ever have reached it at City is never going to be discovered, but we certainly replaced him with an inferior player

Completely disagree about Palmer. We all saw him, we saw he was a diamond and most on this forum were desperate for him to get more game time; cue the liars coming out in force with their revisionism.

Shit happens, we're not infallible, but let's not pretend the last couple of years haven't been poor regards transfers.
I agree, people who saw Palmer play even fleetingly knew the talent he had, anyone who didn't doesn't know fuck all about talent tbh.

Shit really does happen.

Oscar Bobbs injury being just one example.

Imagine if he'd not broken his leg.... imagine if he'd have done what Palmer has done....imagine what the content on here would've been like....imagine !!

Exactly. Two serious injuries changed the complexion completely and put the planning we had done on to the back-foot. We can revise things as much as we wish, but the only reason that people are now calling for radical change is because we have lost these two, and several others, to injury. If you take Rodri, Bobb, KDB, Foden, Grealish, Doku, Kovacic, Stones, Ake, Dias, Akanji and Walker out of any team in world football, it will struggle. Yesterday, 35% of our first-team squad was injured - FACT. We have faced an unusual period, compounded by, and possibly caused by a huge number of games leading to a shortened summer break.

I absolutely support the idea of introducing more academy talent into the first-team, but it is also true that when I argued the same point three years ago, and since, many posters were critical and said that it could not be done if we wanted to keep winning. In my opinion, they were wrong then. We should have been giving regular game time to academy talent back then, and consistently since. I am speaking of the best of those academy players being given game time in cup competitions and then PL games, as subs to begin with, perhaps with one starter in each game. I think we have not delivered on that, but my goodness our success cannot be argued with.

Oscar Bobb is doing great, imagine having him and Palmer.

Something like that I would presume.

You can have a few good players in your team don't you know, at least I imagine you can:-)

I don’t understand your post ?

Mahrez didn't actually land running and took time. Just a suggestion, but why don't we afford similar time to new players
I’m not writing off either of them. Just stating that watching them beat a player, cut inside and have a shot blocked every time makes me appreciate how Mahrez cut inside from the right and scored - making it look easy.

Doku has been with us for a season and a half now though.

Some fans have become very entitled and raggish in their beliefs.

One things for sure, I didn’t realise how good Mahrez was until we brought in Doku and Savinho.

Makes me appreciate everything he did for us now!
Mahrez was a superb football player.

Same can be said for Sterling. Sterling had his shortcomings, was frustrating and wasteful at times (especially 1v1 with the keeper), but fuck me he worked hard for the team in the press and was massively active and positive in attack.

I think he is saying that we should have kept Palmer as having both Palmer and Bobb in the team would have been the best option of all. Given Palmer's current form, I am sure most would agree, but he has gone.

He really was, but not according to many here.

Mahrez actually started very well for us.

He wasn’t an automatic starter from the first few games after he joined but made himself so with good performances and by early December had 7 goals and 6 assists in all competitions. He sort of faded a bit from around Christmas onwards in that first season but he started very well.

I agree, I used to love Sterling. He was constantly buzzing around causing a nuisance for the defenders. We definitely got his best years, but he was very much a confidence player. His best years here were when Arteta had his arm around him.

Sterling and Doku are very similar to me. I would have Sterling all day long though. Doku (And Savinho) dont seem to have that winning mindset, that go get it thing. Lovely footwork sometimes but I am not interested in that, that only comes when you are confident (Or Messi), its what they do off the ball and I see no defensive intelligence in them both.

Yesterday watching Savinho and Gaurdiol (Might have been Lewis) both defend, pointing at the same player that ghosted in behind them both was alarming, jeez get that shit sorted out.

But overall I think our collective football intelligence has gone down. I watch Bernard (And a couple of others) and he can see the dangers (And opportunities) maybe 2 passes ahead sometimes, he goes into that space or danger area and makes use of himself as much as possible. He probably wont even get the ball but he has made space or cutoff a pass/attack. Doku, Savinho, Nunes, dont do that, they seem to be thinking a lot smaller or maybe dont see the bigger picture. (Savinho, will try dribbles knowing that Walker/RB has gone past him and if he loses it we are in trouble). And I think all of those things have diluted us to a degree. Bad purchases tbh.

I think Savinho will work out
He is low on confidence but I think once he scores he will deliver big time…he just needs to get that monkey off his back
He definitely has the skill

Thing is we will never know if the transfer windows have been poor.
We have had the heart of this team ripped out through injuries and fatigue. It's takes 12 months to get Pep.

On the whole ot does seem the last few windows haven't been good but put Doku in our treble team would he be a better player ?
Still Messi is coming now lol
