Manchester City prepare to recruit central defender. #MCFC

MANCHESTER City are assessing a group of Europe’s most highly rated defenders as they seek to recruit a reliable partner for captain Vincent Kompany in the centre of their defence.

Txiki Begiristain, the club’s recently appointed director of football, has identified the position as a focus for his strategy of strengthening City’s squad with a cadre of carefully selected players who can develop into future elite performers.

City’s scouting list includes Borussia Dortmund’s central defensive pair of Mats Hummels, a Germany international, and Neven Subotic, who plays for Serbia. They are also looking at Nicolas N’Koulou of Olympique Marseilles.

Do we really need another defender?
 
If we sell Lescott we very much do because Kolo is also out of contract soon which will leave us this summer with: Kompany, Nastasic, and Rekik, with Micah also able to play CB. I could see us actually signing two central defenders to replace both Lescott and Kolo.

talkSPORT Spain/MUTV commentator on Twitter said N'Kolou is as good as Thiago Silva and only 22. Any French football experts here?

Would nastasic still be 1st choice or healthy competition?

There's no way Nastasic would be 1st choice if somebody like Hummels joins us. I think Hummels is more experienced player and Nastasic could learn a lot from him and develop into world class defender.
 
Both great CB's but can't see Dortmund selling.

I think we should sell Lescott and let Kolo leave. Gives us a bit of cash and saves us a lot in wages.

We then have Nastasic, Kompany and Rekik as recognized CB's. We then have Rodwell and Garcia and Micah who can play CB.
I can see Rodwell being moulded into a libero in the future, I think he has the attributes to play that position as does Garcia. Especially if we continue with trying to push into a 532/352 formation.

It sounds like were looking for the finished article, meaning Nastasic may have to make do with being back up, something I think we all thought he was signed for anyway.
The great thing is, Nastasic has proved already that he has what it takes to be a success in England, meaning if we do sign a quality more experienced CB, and they or Kompany are injured or suspended we know there is quality waiting in the wings.
 
Hummels again?! .... If it wasn't the Sunday Times and Duncan Castle, who tends be the most accurate journo when it comes to City and does not spout fiction, I would believe this is non-sense... bring on Jan 1st!!
 
It would be borderline insane to spend big money on a CB when you have the best already and a young lad who looks well beyond his years as your top pairing. And I expect them to be the top pairing for many years.

Use the cash we have on something of necessity, like a pacey attacking option.
 
Cant see why nastastic cant claim the second spot as his own,can only get better with each game he partners kompany in,seems to have settled in well,only reason we need another cb would be down to injuries/suspensions to either komps/nasty...
