Champions League 2020/21

Wednesday: Atalanta vs. PSG

Thursday: Leipzig vs. Atletico Madrid

Friday: Barca vs. Bayern Munich

Saturday: City vs. Lyon

Will be interesting to see how this COVID issue impacts Atletico - not clear how it will be handled, particularly for those who have had close contact to the 2 who have tested positive. Atletico released the following:

Corresponding protocols for such cases have been activated, which require new tests to be carried out on the first team and the staff travelling to Lisbon, as well as the close contacts of the two people who tested positive. This has resulted in changes to the training schedule, travel itinerary and accommodation plans for the trip to Lisbon. The club will coordinate with UEFA over a new schedule and as soon as there is a new plan it will be made public.

I’d welcome a hard group for once. Most of the time the group stages of the CL are like watching the early rounds of the EFL Cup against lower division opposition. Piss easy games against very very poor sides. We score 5s 6s and even 7s with some regularity in the group stages. And to be honest, while goals are entertaining, the games aren’t, and we’ve had sterner tests against Championship teams in the domestic Cups than we get in the CL group stage.

We’ve only really had one really tough group in the last 7 years in the CL, and we even topped that group (2015 Juve Sevilla ’gladbach). We finished second a couple of times before but actually in easier groups than that.

This side needs to beat some massive teams in Europe.

Real was a good start, because before that it was 4 years since we beat a proper European powerhouse going back to the Barca win in 2016, and the players lack some self-belief because of it.

They should have slaughtered Real on Friday, but we slipped up on 4 or 5 attacks that should have been goals and in the end had to play a lot of that game uncomfortably.

This side is one of the best ever to step onto a football pitch and they need to put down some markers on the international stage by beating the likes Madrid, Bayern, Juventus, Barcelona, PSG etc. consistently.

And if they do, if we can beat 3 or 4 of them in a row, the players will realise they're the ones to be feared not the opposition, and we'll win multiple CL's, I really believe that.

The first round draw was made.

Ferencvaros (Hungary) v Djugardens (Sweden)
Celtic (Scotland) v KR Reykjavik (Iceland)
Legia Warzawa (Poland) v Drita (Kosovo) or Linfield (Northern Ireland)
Sheriff Tiraspol (Moldova) v Fola Esch (Luxembourg)
Connah's Quay Nomads (Wales) v FK Sarajevo (Bosnia & Herzegovina)
Red Star Belgrade (Serbia) v Europa (Gibraltar)
Buducnost Podgorica (Montenegro) v Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria)
Ararat (Armenia) v Omonia Nicosia (Cyprus)
Floriana (Malta) v CFR Cluj (Romania)
Maccabi Tel Aviv (Israel) v Riga (Latvia)
Qarabag (Azerbaijan) v Sileks (Macedonia)
Dinamo Tbilisi (Georgia) v Tirana (Albania)
Dynamo Brest (Belarus) v Astana (Kazakhstan)
Molde (Norway) v KuPS (Finland)
Flora (Estonia) v Suduva (Lithuania)
Celje (Slovenia) v Dundalk (Ireland)
KI (Faroe Islands) v Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia)

The highlight is probably Andy Morrisons Connahs Quay Nomads playing at home (sort of) to Sarajevo. Game will take place at Cardiff Citys ground, which is quite far away from Connahs Quay. Nice to see Omonia Nicosia back in Europe too.

Some new names and some familiar names in there but realistically I think only one or two will make it to the group stages. More teams to be added in later rounds.

really think it's bollocks that these clubs work all year to qualify for Europe and get knocked out within a couple of weeks.

Ive always thought that once we get one European Cup trophy, a few more will follow quite quickly after that.

Didn’t we get one point, one year? Had all champions in the group, Ajax we in it.

So Barca/Bayern are gonna get 1 day extra to recover/prepare for the semi. It's a conspiracy!

Well athletico fear that the 2 players who are infected, may have infected the other players too

Wait and watch situation
