Champions League wildcard a possibility?
Barcelona won their fifth Champions League crown last season, but what would happen if they didn't qualify for the competition one season?

"Sometimes, for the interest of football, why not give wildcards like in tennis," says Bartomeu. "Sometimes the top players don't qualify and are given wildcards for the interest. This can happen in football. That is the decision of Uefa.

"Sometimes, clubs have a bad season and it is a big punishment to not play in the Champions League. We need a stronger Champions League and more and more interest for the football fans and to make it more competitive.

"The Champions League is the biggest competition and most important one."

Was reading that earlier on,what caught my eye first off was the premier league being Barcelona's rival,then the last bit about widcards this is the start of it give another season or so and can see this being implemented anything to keep the old boys club together...

Who would qualify for a wildcard? Former winners? So lets invite Notts Forest who haven't played in the top flight for 2 decades? Or relegated to be Aston Villa?

I would support the idea of a wildcard, but on one stipulation, the team receiving it receive no prize money or broadcasting revenue throughout the competition. Sort of like amateurs competing in golf tournaments.

If the idea is to include the best teams (based on history or whatever) then surely they'd play for the chance of simply competing, and the honour of such a 'prestigious' competition, and not for money...

We'll see how many are keen to play then...

It's all about money, maximizing viewing figures. The rags and dippers still have global appeal along with the Milan clubs.
