Mods please move if in wrong place.

3 games in and am I wrong in thinking that we have been less bothered about possession football and more about a more solid defence? Huddersfield back line, less stuf in the midfield? Noticed our back line was more of a V shape with B Silva wide right, Mendy wide left, Laporte slightly back and Stones or Vinnie in the middle and either one forward of the middle to the right. When Huddersfield and Arsenal got the ball these 5 moved back to form a back 5.

You're wrong on the back 5 anyway, it's 11 attacking and 11 defending. Think Guardiola is working out a system for the dippers though with the back 3 and Mendy pinning the left wing.

I think he's just experimenting with formations now Mendy is back and KDB is out. Still need to work out who will start out of Sane, Sterling & Mahrez, and indeed, where.
Plus, it makes sense to start slightly more defensive just after the World Cup, as the players still need to regain fitness.

At one point on Sunday the possession was 79-21! I think Guardiola is giving more thought to the weaknesses of the opposition rather than attempting to bore them to death with moves that involve at least a thousand passes! He also possesses a squad stuffed with players who can create virtually anything given the bounce and run of the ball, and he has players who can create something out of nothing, and players who will have the opposition's jaws dropping with their magicality - the first goal on Sunday is stuff that sets us apart from a lot of teams.

Somewhere in Pep's book he talks about keeping the ball on one side of the pitch until the opposition comes looking for it and loses their shape, before a 50/60 yard diagonal pass is launched to a wide player who Pep has instructed to stay on the line - the wide player then bombs forward. At the moment, that wide player is Mendy mostly. Walker and Sterling do it. Mendy was further up the pitch than a wing back - amazing recovery pace.
