Chelsea (H) | Post-Match Thread

When Gueye was sent off in the first PSG game, he was heard to say "They're toying with us out there". Imagine the psychological impact that must have had. They came to Manchester to give it a go but once that initial burst had been weathered, we toyed with them again. Hence they lost their heads.

We could have made fewer changes, or changed things at half-time, and had the same effect on Chelsea, giving us a psychological advantage. But the only heads we got in yesterday were our own.

Pep might be a lot of things but arrogant isn't one of them.
It's getting nearly as tedious reading that than the other nonsense cliché that he's over thinking.
He put out a team which was more than capable of winning the game and should have been over by half time.
He's earnt the right to tinker, the league is won and although getting beat is never fun, it'll mean fuck all when we lift the trophy.
sick of the bullshit comment "that team was good enough to win".
obviously not , WE FUCKING LOST. the same was said after the Leeds game . when will he, and people on here learn.

Well that ‘dogshit starting 11’ would have won that game yesterday except for the following:

1) Aguero penalty
2) Eddie very poor on first goal. Seems to get an easy ride on here compared to other players and manager.
3) Sterling penalty that should have been given.

1) I have no idea what he was thinking. In his 10 years here he has never to my knowledge tried anything so stupid. 2-0 would have given us a big boost the way the escape gave them one. I still think they may have got a draw yesterday even at 2-0 though

2) I have to agree. He got a weak hand on it. It was similar to the one Steffan turned around the post against Spurs in the final. He appears quite slow getting down to low shots, particularly on that side. The Villa goal was another example. He has a presence and is great with his feet but if I was his coach he would be practicing low shots to improve his feet moving, speed and agility

2) That was shocking from Taylor and Atwell on var. It was more a penalty than the Jesus one, Zuma was all over him culminating in whacking his thigh just as he was about to shoot. It was exactly what var was brought in for, I'm sick of this bollocks about not overturning the refs decision, at the very least he should have been sent to the monitor. It was 100% a penalty but I fear we'd have missed it anyway.

While collectively it wasn't great that was understandable given all the changes. We could have won though but a draw would have been a fair result. Mentally and physically we appeared a bit weak at times. Certain individuals were poor, Mendy, Rodri, Cancello and Ederson should have done better on their equaliser. As a DM I have no idea why Rodri was advancing so far with the ball, then dawdled on it and lost it. Once he did we were fucked because that big hole they ran into was where he should have been and he's too slow to get back.

Laporte wasn't great but he was often trying to cover Mendy as well who was getting mullered on his side. A bit like Stones used to be he switches off at times and a goal against is often the end result.

Mendy is Mendy. Never a defender, he just hasn't got the brain for it and now sadly the pace either.

Cancello is a puzzle. A few weeks ago he looked the best full back in the world, now he looks bang average at best. No idea what's going on with him.

Sterling is still an asset with his pace and mobility but that brain freeze and getting bullied off the ball too easily is still there. Add to that his goals have dried up, obviously aside from the one he got yesterday, but in general. Big decision needed on him close season. If we get a decent offer he may be gone to fund a replacement if we have one in mind.

Jesus, I feel sorry for him. He tries his heart out and did well to set up the goal and win the penalty but he's just below the level for a top striker. At times he's totally anonymous. Maybe another big decision the end of the season

Sergio. He'll always rightly be a legend here and is still capable of moments of magic like his goal at Palace. Sadly his pace and mobility has gone and the decision to leave is probably the right one, hard as it his for everyone. Yesterday he fluffed a great chance to bow out as once again the man who's goal sealed the title. He deserves a better swansong and I'd love to see him come on in the champions league final and score. I don't want no nerve biting last minute winner though my heart couldn't take it, just a nice double when we're a couple of goals up and in control.

A Villa win today would be nice and would totally wipe out the pain of yesterday very quickly.

A bit frustrated but part of the reason behind the team selection must have been that Pep didn't want to give Chelsea an insight as how he plans to play them in the final. Anyway, fingers crossed for Villa this afternoon.

[I've not read through 198 pages, so this has probably been raised previously, if so sorry for the repetition]

Great post , a bit of common sense at last

Christ no, I'd be suicidal if I did that.

;)
Thank you for proving my point that you are wrong in saying that I just post negative...you just notice the negative ones, which says more about you than me

Maybe you need to be a bit less defensive

pretty much this. Ederson needs to work on his hand and arm strength. Its the fourth goal like that I can remember this season. Small margins and we would have won yesterday. He gave them an opportunity to stake a claim for the first team and they all pretty much flunked it, particularly Mendy, Torres, Sergio and Cancelo. Raheem played ok and still carries a threat. He did well to take the ball off Agueros foot and I think he is slowly working back to some level of form.

Yes, it would have been nice to put a marker down for a certain fixture in the near future but yesterday's defeat means diddly-squat in the grand scheme of things. It wasn't just about resting players from a gruelling match on Tuesday (both physically & mentally) it was also about keeping th eother members of the squad match sharp so that if they are needed then they will be okay to fit straight into an important match if anyone picks up an injury.

Their form since he took over has been a lot more impressive than the stats you've provided. In 25 matches they've only lost 2, with 17 wins and 6 draws.

And over the same period we have only not one 4 games.. three of those with wholesale changes.. that is my point. I honestly believe without the changes that turns to 2. Basically winning all your games bar 2 is a lot better than 8.

The morning after the night before.....

You deal with what's in front of you, & the rest will take care of itself. I had a feeling of foreboding for yesterday's match. I said as much in another thread.

There was a massive chance that Pep would over-think yesterday, change the personnel & system to throw Chelsea a curve ball. He's done it before, & he did it again yesterday. I just wanted our season over with so we could concentrate our efforts on the CL final.

We had enough to win yesterday, or at least get a point. Considering all the changes we made, Chelsea weren't that far ahead of us. I also believe it was our mentality which beat us yesterday. We seemed to approach the second half as if we'd already won the match.

Chelsea didn't beat us yesterday. Because of our complacency & sloppy attitude, Manchester City beat themselves. I honestly believe if a win yesterday was absolutely crucial, the team we put out would have gotten a result. That mentality, or lack of hopefully won't come back to bite us on the arse!

I look at the probable team for the final and whilst Sterling will almost certainly not be in it, I would have no problem with him starting. Jesus maybe too. Any of the others who didn’t play against PSG would be more of a concern to me.

I would play Sterling in every game now to get his confidence and form up.

All of the players who will play in the final need at least one more game as a unit, possibly two. We can’t wrap them up in cotton wool. They have to train at full intensity and play games. There may be an injury buts that’s the risk we need to take to keep them sharp.

I think we have shown this season that we can function well without our best player De Bruyne so I don’t have too many concerns about the forward and attacking midfield as we have options. A bigger concern to me would be an injury to Walker or Zinchenko because if they are out that makes us instantly weaker. Cancelo is very poor at the moment and Mendy doesn’t bear thinking about.

If Pep picked eleven monkeys to play for City in a PL match I would raise an eyebrow and repeat that you could never second guess a Guardiola selection. It would never dawn on me that eleven monkeys might not be the best eleven to take the field. Pep did not field eleven monkeys yesterday but the selection has caused some surprise and even fury on here. I'm not going to question it because I don't know what factors led Pep to choose this eleven. Only Pep and his staff know the physical condition of the eleven (fourteen!) who played on Tuesday. Only Pep knows what morale was like among those who had not played on Tuesday. And everyone who played yesterday is a top class professional who deserved the chance to seal the title. My concern is not any nonsense about Pep overthinking, underthinking or not thinking or any rubbish about arrogance. Pep is the greatest manager ever. Full stop. End of story. I would be the arrogant fool to criticise him. My concern is not the title, nor is it the CL final because the idea that the City eleven which takes the field on May 29 will be at a psychological disadvantage is risible. If City lose on May 29 it certainly will not be because of psychological factors. Our team has shown time and again that it has enormous reserves of psychological strength. My concern is with our squad and for our squad.

I have no criticism to make of any player as an individual. They are all first class. In some cases that should be "were" rather than "are" and we know some will not be here next season. On the other hand some will be top class in the future, but aren't there yet. Some are simply going through periods of poor form. The result is that when 9 changes are necessary the team can lack balance. Jesus works hard but has to come deep or wide for the ball and Sergio is the shadow of the genius he was just over a year ago. How sad that is. The midfield looks reasonable going forward but has clear weaknesses when we don't have possession and for all the efforts of the admirable Ake yesterday we were reminded forcibly of the importance of the full backs to the way City play. Kyle Walker is irreplaceable at the moment and Ben Mendy is a shadow of the player he was before the injuries. I cannot watch Mendy without wondering what might have been and what we have missed.

I make these points not as any criticism of anybody, and they can be dismissed as the ramblings of a Cityitis riddled neurotic, but simply because, at a time when we may be on the threshold of the greatest ever season in the club's history we will move forward and we will change. We left Joe, Ya Ya, Zaba, Vinnie and David in recent years and Sergio will depart at the end of this month. The thrills of a great era are but memories. Fortunately Pep will remain to take us on to even greater heights.

Got what we deserved with that team selection. Fuck all.

Edit: Aguero, Mendy, Torres, Sterling and Ake should be nowhere near our starting 11. Put the fucking league to bed please Pep.
Don't let the pen cloud your judgement of Sergio's performance yesterday. He was dropping deep, looking lively and had got his superb short passing game going. Yes, one heavy touch, but that's it. He scores and everyone says he rounded off a great performance. I also thought Ake was solid - as he always is - despite the commentary lumping him in with Mendy.

Conceeding a goal in the 93rd minute 3 weeks after conceeding one in 91st minute to drop 2 points is criminal for a team of this standard and something they need to cut out now. This league would be done not but for those two sloppy lapses.

I understand the starting 11, we played Tuesday night and we don't want any injuries, the team picked was good enough but several players let us down, fullbacks were poor. Also Sergio made one hell of a mistake which cost us but we should have had a penalty before they scored the winner, VAR is a fucking joke.
We will go on and win the league but also when we play them in the final I think we can shock them, the last two games have been against a very different set of players who will play in the final, and Pep has a very good insight into their game after yesterday and the semi final, so lets take some positives we will be totally different in the Champions League final, so hopefully everything will pay off in the end, Come on City stick together.
