A bit of a long shot here but.....some friends of ours have been quoted a price for the pointing, capping, flashing and making good of a stone chimney on a grade 2 listed building. Small chimney feeding from one fire. Without giving the price away we seem to think it's excessive.....any ideas anyone as to the rough price based on the description ?? Cheers.

Depends how high up. A decent outfit will get scaffolding and do a proper job, a bloke with a ladder might charge half as much. As with all these things you need to get various quotes and you need to listen to what they are proposing to do.

I had similar problem; not listed, but very high. Scaffolding used. Cost about £700. Pointing and capping. No flashing required.

It's a small mid terrace miner cottage ( not a shared chimney ) and they've been quoted £900 for the scaffolding ( they say optional ) and £3100 for the job so a total of £4000.......

that does indeed sound excessive, are there any restrictions due to it being grade 2? specific materials to be used etc

oh and scaffold optional? that would ring alarm bells these days

Find out who your local Home Improvement Agency uses and get them to look at it.
