Father in Laws PC went on the blink and wouldn't boot up. (Win7)
Says Windows failed to start, poss due to hardware/software change and to insert Win disk and reboot - tried this but wont read disc - tried to get into Bios to change it to read from drive but not having that either, just comes up with same error.

Have now tried to transfer files to lappy to at least get photos back - tried to read drive but cant access due to cycle redundancy error
Tried running chkdsk but says the file system is RAW and chkdsk not available!

Anything I can do at all or is it fooked!!

You're in a bit of trouble there mate, your hard disk is fucked. Try the recovery options listed by others but you'll probably be having to shell out a bit of cash for a new one. A PC repair shop might be a good idea if you're unsure as this stuff is their bread and butter.

Try resetting BIOS to default settings or check Boot up order in the BIOS boot menu to confirm hard disk (SATA or IDE) is recognised and is first place to attempt to boot from.

Can you press F8 to get to Windows menu options for such as Safe Mode ?

If you can get to Safe Mode or Command Prompt or have a Windows 7 boot disk\CD and can run chkdsk. Try running it with a /f option (/f fix). the chkdsk must be Windows chkdsk not a MS-DOS or old style command prompt chkdsk

i.e. Chkdsk /f

Failing that do you have access to a WinPE boot disk to give access to local drives ?

You can't run chkdsk on a RAW file system.
The link I included above will create a PE USB disk on a stick with the recovery tools. http://www.paragon-software.com/home/rk-free/
He may even be able to rescue the HD but should at least give him access to his files.
