Christening

Don't forget the customary half hour speech you must make thanking/blessing all present. I recommend an immediate crash course in the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas; it can be bought or downloaded for only a few hundred quid and only takes around 60 hours of intense study.
Then, and only then, can you enjoy the day.

If you love this girl and are going to be with her for the rest of your life and take on the child as it was one of your saggy balled cockney offspring then just go, smile, do as you are told and then have a few sherberts after.

You are serious about this girl are you not?

This thread is inevitably going to turn in to another few Christians vs many Atheists argument but I simply don't understand people who seem freaked out by the concept of going to a Christening. I've been to several as a devout Agnostic and just did whatever I had to do as a Family member of the child being Christened. Family comes first.

I think the secular equivalent is known as a "Baby Naming" ceremony. Sounds great!

you again

yes, cheers. i will go and think about the pub party after.

fucking man up, it's not about you, it's about the baby.

I went to my daughters christening, with my new girlfriend and my son and when i got there, my daughters mum (my ex) asked me to pretend i was the her other two daughters dad so they could be baptised aswell. i said yea, why not. Its for the kids.

Then when my son got christened, we all had a big piss up at clifton cricket club, was a great day. all this, ''oh, i'll look daft nonsense'' get over yourself.

Im probably the biggest anti religious guy you can think off but just because it's not for me doesnt mean it shouldnt be for others, and again, you shouldnt be thinking of yourself. Everyone who is there will know that the parents know fuck all because they've all been through similar before.

The convo between the parents and the priest goes like this:

Do you reject Satan?

Reply: [I do.]

And all his works?

Reply: [I do.]

And all his empty promises?

Reply: [I do.]

Do you believe in the God the Father, almighty, creator of heaven and earth?

Reply: [I do.]

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead and is now seated at the right hand of the Father?

Reply: [I do.]

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting?

Reply: [I do.]

Is it your will that [Name] be baptized in the faith of the Church, which we have all professed with you?

Reply: [I do.]

what a load of bollocks religion really is.

Ok, my girlfriend has booked the christening for baby Lyla next month at a church, Of corse i wont tell her but im a little uneasy about the whole thing...

1. having to pretend i am the Dad to the baby ... when i am not
2. inside i really really hate religion
3. I've never been to a christening and i don't really know what role im meant to be playing.

Anyone been and know what happens ? is it actually a good day out ?

She really ought to invite the real father and thats a shame he isn't there.

Enjoy the day and relax. Churchgoers tend to have them as part of the Sunday service but my guess is that yours will be separate followed by a reception afterwards.

In terms of duty, you have to promise to bring the child up with Christian values until she's old enough to decide for herself.

I would try and persuade your girlfriend to invite the real father. There's no shame whatsoever in you + plus father being there.

Make sure you take a camera and take some photos. Sensitivity is needed in the church but its a great chance to meet people, socialise, make friends and enjoy.

You might even finds that Christians are normal people with the same concerns as everyone.

The Vatican planned the anarchy in England last week. Check it out.

Fortunately England is Our Lady's Dowry and she was looking after us.
