Anyone know of any good books or websites to read up on this? Only just realised my mothers grandfather was involved in nuclear tests at Christmas Island. Spent the last hour on Google. Interesting stuff. Think he's mentioned in a few books so I'll have to get the names of them.

I know it'll happen anyway so I may as well ask as well, views on it?

I worked with a bloke who was an old Navy guy and he was present at the Nuclear tests, "see your bones through your hands" is pretty much all he ever said about it

Don't know if this came up in your search, but lots of names mentioned, your great grandfather may be one of them.

I know a City fan who's mothers grandfather was involved in nuclear tests at Christmas Island. It must have affected the lad because he's a weird fooker, frightened of buying a pint and usually disappears before the night is over.

Double vodka orange or cranberry & you don't wake up with a headache! ...You do however wake up in Leeds and end up paying a good £50-60 for a taxi home.

Don't know if it is genuine but my physics teacher had a picture in his class room of a nuclear explosion on or near the Christmas islands on November the 8th 1958, he said he was on the aircraft, only sticks in my mind as my birthday is nov 8 so as a kid It stuck in my mind...

Just watching ‘britains nuclear bomb scandal: our story’ bbc recorded earlier this week.

I’m sure I saw a mention of it on a thread this week, but can’t locate .

Essentially thousands of servicemen were labrats for uk knowledge on the effects of nuclear bombs…

My father-in-law was on Christmas Island. He died last year, from a degenerative leukemia blood issue. He had no other health issues ever, but it was there eating away at him, till it tipped over the edge and he rapidly went down hill in his last year.

I joined the mailing list of the legal campaign for justice. It’s too late for him, and it is too late for most of the poor souls who have suffered for being human experiments. There are few servicemen left… let alone indiginous people (Australia, Christmas Island), who can tell their story, before they get some sense of apology or recompense.

:-(

I gained a couple of books from my father-in-law (see previous post). Can’t locate them at the moment but I have a few on it

This is an excellent book, albeit from a US serviceman's experiences during the atomic tests. It’s quite terrifying what they were exposed to.
