Manchester City are set for talks with River Plate president Daniel Passarella over a potential move for long-term target Ezequiel Cirigliano.

Goal.com understands that the River supremo is likely to arrive in Manchester over the coming days tasked with raising funds for the Buenos Aires outfit, and is aware of City's interest in the defensive midfielder.

Cirigliano, 20, has played over 40 times for the Argentine giants, becoming a first-team regular following their relegation to Nacional B in 2011.

The combative midfielder has been described as the new Javier Mascherano in some quarters, and according to agent Rodrigo Vilarino, has been on City's radar for a couple of years.

"City have been following Ezequiel since the start of 2010, when they sent him an invitation to England for a 20-day trial," he told Ole in May.

Passarella is aware of interest from City in the starlet, and it is understood that he will meet with a number of clubs on the continent with River keen on raising funds from their most highly sought-after talent.

Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have also been linked with the defensive midfielder in the past, while City reserve team coach Attilio Lombardo is said to have been keeping close tabs on Cirigliano when he worked as a scout before replacing Andy Walsh as second-string coach at Carrington earlier in 2012.

Cirigliano would be the fourth Argentine to join City's squad if a deal was to be secured, with compatriots Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez having all started in the Premier League champions' 3-1 victory away to Newcastle on Sunday.

Tevez City said:
15 Million Pound is very expensive price for a defensive midfielder.
12 million for Barry who was in last year of his contract
15 million for NDJ
16 million for Garcia
12 million for Rodwell

Seems the going rate for us.

So what happens to Rodwell and Garcia ?
I think it's more Barry getting on a bit and Rodwell when he isn't injured will be groomed as more of a centre half

Love how we are building for the future, I know fuck all about this lad but Argentinians are tough fuckers.

if this rumours are true and we will sign him i think this is the end for barry at us....and maybe rodwell will be transformed in a CB

I bet you if we do sign him it will be considerably less than £15million up front, the Daily Star always exaggerates figures.

I don't know anything of the lad other than his growing reputation, however,i dont think we can ever have enough talented Argies in the team, they are different class in their attitude, passion and winning mentality stakes which, for me,is always the foundation of a good footballer.

If he has the same mentality as Aguero, Zabaleta and Tevez, to some extent, then I will welcome him with open arms

We seem to get closer to signing him unless everyone is talking bollox. I wonder if he'd go straight into the first team fold? He's supposed to be really good. If you Google his name there are photos of him kissing girls and everything, hopefully he wouldn't become our new Mario. :)

I think this lad could be the real deal,he certainly looks the part - a solid,no nonsense, tasty little fucker - something we're currently missing in the centre of the park.

Arsenal join Man City in hunt for ‘new Javier Mascherano’ Ezequiel Cirigliano

Arsenal have joined Manchester City in the hunt for ‘the new Javier Mascherano’ Ezequiel Cirigliano, according to reports.

The 20-year-old midfielder is a rising star at local club River Plate, and has recently been strongly linked with a move to the Premier League.

City boss Roberto Mancini is said to have weighed up a £5million bid for the enforcer but Arsenal have now emerged as a likely option, with Arsene Wenger said to be scouting the player intensively in the last few weeks.

The Gunners are on the lookout for another holding player, and powerhouse Cirigliano fits the bill perfectly.

A rugged, all-action defensive midfielder, Cirigliano has been compared to fellow countryman and Barcelona star Mascherano and interested outfits are said to be forming a queue for his signature.

River Plate are believed to want a fee in excess of £8million for Cirigliano but would be interested in doing a part exchange, especially with Arsenal where full-back Andre Santos is among their new year targets.

Was listening to talksport today and they had Tim Vickery or someone on from Brazil and they talked about this kid.

Vickery said he rarely goes past his own half, limits himself almost. Has a good passing range and will get stuck in.

Don't really think he is the player we need when we have Milner, Barry, Rodwell and Garcia for those positions but at his age it might be worth bringing him in now then loaning him out until Barry starts slowing down although the way he plays he could be playing forever as he never relies on pace or fitness!
