City and corners

There is so much misinformation in this thread it is quite extraordinary. ALL teams struggle with scoring goals from corners and simply we are not as shit as the rest of them.

In one of the other "corners" threads I wrote last week:

There is this perception that we are shit at corners. Certainly that was the case last season when we were "corner counting" during that long sequence of shit. However, our overall record of goals scored from corners under Pelle is good. In fact no team has scored more in Pelle's time here albeit we are awarded more corners than most.

2013/2014 - Joint 1st ( City 12, Liverpool 12)
2014/2015 - Joint 4th (City 8 behind QPR 9, Chelsea 10, WBA 14)
2015/2016 - Joint 1st (City 6, Palace 6, Bournemouth 6, Norwich 6)

Since that post I've updated the tables so everyone can look at them warts and all. The tables are based on Premier League games only (2 1/2) seasons since Pelle took over at the start of 2013/2014. I've only included the 16 teams who have featured in all 3 seasons - 13/14, 14/15, 15/6.

1. Table 1 filtered by total goals scored from corners

From this you can see we have scored the most goals from corners since Pelle arrived - 26 goals in total from 697 corners. If you look at the C TOTAL column you will see that the figure of 697 corners is far, far higher than anyone else.

2. Table 2 filtered by goals scored per corner taken - GPC (reference to Ferguson unintended :) )

So the most efficient team is West Brom who score from a corner every c19 corners. As you can see we are a very healthy 3rd in the list with a goal every c27 corners.

Maybe we do practise them afterall :)

I said this earlier in the thread. I knew someone had posted this before.
pfft. Urban myths. eh ?

I think this is the frustration for the fans. We need to work on this sort of attention to detail, be it variety from corners or set pieces. Sometimes I have watched other teams and you can see that the team has worked on unusual corners or set pieces. Even if they don't always come off, it shows that the team has been thinking about, and working on, taking advantage of these critical moments in a game.

Even with the set pieces, we know that either Kolarov or Yaya is going to try and bend the ball over the wall. I don't understand why Pellers doesn't try something different. I recall, for example, a set piece from either last season or the season before, when we had a free kick outside the box and Demichelis peeled off the back and raced to the far side of the box. The ball was floated to him unmarked, he nodded the ball back into the box and we scored.

It's up to Pellegrini to work on these things in training. Corners, set pieces, and even throw ins often lead to critical moments in a games. We need to be a lot smarter and pay far more attention to opportunities like this (something I am sure Pep will remedy).

Exactly this. It's as if we're totally devoid of ideas.

Bingo. ANYTHING different would be appreciated, whether it came off or not. You'd have to think more variety would keep the opposition on their toes as well.

A corner should always have a player to come short. This pulls 2 defenders out of the box, making it less congested and increases you attackers/defenders ratio. If no defenders come out then it leaves you free to play it short. If you have both a left and right footer over the ball the defense are still guessing over whether the corner is an in-swinger or an out-swinger.
But whilst we persist in playing the constant out-swinger then the opposition have plenty of practice at clearing the ball. There is no element of variety, and shows a complete lack of planning or working on anything in training.
The same should be said about any attacking free kick. Always have a left and right footer over the ball.

Does it ? Maybe it just shows that the defenders in a real game are trying a bit harder.
Are you saying we don't practice anything in training. Because that would also show that,
when we make mistakes or something doesn't come off, in other areas of our play.

Yes I am saying we don`t practice in training. Either that or there is a refusal to try anything different. Just look at Bournemouth`s recent game versus the Rags and their second goal. Could you honestly see us trying something like that? There is a complete reliance on the fact that our players are better, and therefore at some point we will score from a corner. 13 corners against Leicester, and not even one out of the seat moment.

Corner schmorner there's more chance of scoring from one of Joe's goal kicks !

It boggles the mind doesn't it, especially since we have two guys in Kolarov and De Bruyne who could deliver deadly in-swingers.

So let me get this right. The tables I posted suggest we get just about the best results than any other team in terms of goals scored from corners and that has been consistently the case for some time. So you completely ignore that and infer a complete lack of planning or working on anything. Your viewpoint doesn't make sense mate.
