City attendances 1976/77 season

Those figures are incorrect. There was an excellent book produced several years ago which analysed the Football League official returns called Football Through The Turnstiles. The figures for 1976-77's top 5 best supported are:

United 53,710
LFC 47,221
MCFC 40,058
AVFC 37,903
NUFC 33,599

The following season City got 41,687 (LFC 45,546; MUFC 51,860). Prior to our move to the Etihad our best ever was 42,725 (1947-48).

Thanks for this. I was certain that we'd averaged just over rather than just under 40K that season. I remember back in the late 1990s doing a piece on City crowds for one of the early MCFC fan websites and coming up with a stat that, United and Liverpool aside, we were the only team to average more than 40,000 in a spell of more than a quarter of a century ending just before the article. And I definitely wrote that we did it not once but twice. Glad you've vindicated that. :)

I think this was the only post WW2 season our home attendances were greater than united’s. Either that season or the one after.

Calling @Gary James !!

For years, it was generally accepted that Maine Road (35,215) had boasted a higher average attendance than Old Trafford (34,254) during the 1954-55 season, mainly due to the last four games, when United’s late season apathy, had been overshadowed by the anticipation of City’s forthcoming Wembley appearance.

It was also noted in the Manchester City Story (Andrew Ward 1984) that it was the last season when City had recorded a higher average attendance than United.

However, since the birth of the internet, United’s average attendance for 54-55 has mysteriously increased to 36,900.

Strangely, United’s Wikipedia page (presumably written by a United fan), records their average as 33,815, and actually lists their individual attendance figures.

Naturally, there’s no point whatsoever in trying to convince a rag that this really happened.

It would be like suggesting that United had successfully lobbied the Football League to reclassify Martyn Margetson’s 1991 own goal at Old Trafford, purely to create the myth that Ryan Giggs had scored a goal in every season that he played.

great season tha,t went to nearly every game home and away, that last game at coventry when we thought we had won the league well a few of us did.

The day we blew it.....

From wikipedia.....Liverpool effectively end Ipswich Town's title challenge by beating them 2–1 at Anfield. Manchester City crash to a 4–0 defeat at relegation threatened Derby County, and are now two points behind the Reds having played a game more.

They effectively won it the following Wednesday when they beat united at anfield, after we'd only managed a draw the previous night.

Remember that game at Derby the pitch was more like a beach there was that much sand on it; Derby had a goal kick in the first half and Dave Watson went towards the ball expecting it to bounce up off the ground so he would control it around chest height when it hit the ground it hardly came back up which completely threw him. It was also the game when they had to repaint the penalty spot on the sand
