I was listening to a Paddy Power podcast earlier on. It was an interview with Niall Quinn ( I know hes not the most popular on bluemoon). He was very complimentary about his time at city, particularly the fans. He said that he believes that the early 90s side was a 25/30 goals a season striker away from being a serious outfit! What are peoples thoughts? Did the early 90s side have league title potential??

Finished 5th in 91 (above The Rags, which felt quite a big deal at the time) and 5th again In 92. Would have got into Europa Lge if the criteria was the same as now (can't remember if they'd ditched the old UEFA Cup by then ? ) Would have enjoyed a bit of European Football at that point.
Coton, Phelan, Curle and Quinn were good players. McMahon i remember being an OK ish 'hard man' too. Some good youngsters too from 86 Youth Cup team, White, Redmond, Lake (prior to bad injury)
Maybe perhaps a few players short of a 'really'good side looking back
Peter Reid did quite well initially, though like many I wonder how we would have done if Kendall had not walked out on us to return to his 'football wife'?
Looking back I certainly felt we were 'getting there' ....but then The Premier League happened!! and after that we all know how it all went!!

Think they ditched The 'Cup Winners Cup '
didn't they , not UEFA Cup? Having 3 European comps and not 2 did also mean you didn't have to play about 50 matches before getting to one of the 'lesser' finals!

As I've said elsewhere think signing Trevor Sinclair's at this time would have turned us from a good side to a great one. Reid didn't receive the support from Swales and then it was down hill from there to the 98 relegation, after which came a couple of the most fun seasons I've ever known.

How good was Phelan? I was young when he was playing for City so can't remember enough to rate him, but was listening to him on a podcast recently and he said there was talk that Barcelona were after him at one point.

We finished 5th in 91 and 92 but had become a bit of a long ball side. Ive always thought we should have signed Beardsley when he left Liverpool for Everton.

Kendall leaving us knocked us back for sure, an injury free paul lake would’ve gone on to be a world superstar, obv not at city swales would’ve seen to that!!, we were decent under reid but always the lack of money was looming in the background, i enjoyed them times at maine road to be honest!!!

He was good, but not two and a half million quid good (an awful lot of money then)
We'd have been better chucking a bit more money at it and buying Shearer (not for left back)
