City in the UEFA Cup 76-79

I remember watching the match from the North Stand, and watching Juventus kick the living daylights out of us that night, but also remember about 3/4 of the Juventus team played for the Italian National side at that time..............

They did kick us to death, remember Doyle being kicked in the chest after being hacked down.

Yeah remember that, it looked vicious at the time. We went for a drink afterwards at Rusholme Conservative Club and Paul Power used to come in after the games. We were all slagging Juve off as 'dirty bastards' and Paul was saying "oh it wasn't too bad", he probably meant in comparison to Leeds but even so it looked bad.

That Juve team contained 5 of Italy's 1982 World Cup winning squad. Zoff, Tardelli, Causio, Gentile, Scirea, 4 of them started in the Final and Causio was a late sub.

Brings back memories for me of forgetting where we parked the car! Also, I was with my big sister who had knitted herself a massive blue & white Dr who scarf. I wished I had it, sitting on drafty Platt lane wooden seats (as opposed to hudling in the kippax usually with my brother and 10 No. 6 each). Dino zoff became a bit of a hero despite frustrating us. Great, exciting night playing a team from the far off reaches. What fantastic noise, what hopes for the next round...and how many miles walked looking for the car afterwards.

Yeah they were cynical bastards & in those days refs were even more bent towards European teams than they are with Barca etc now. They could kick you as much as they wanted, but do it back & they hit the ground like they've been shot.

I remember there were the same kind of clueless knobheads in those days, like those who talk shite about Bony now, moaning about Brian Kidd, & this game set him off as a City player. What a player he was for City btw.

I seem to remember a commentator saying that Gentile was a player who liked to swap shirts DURING the match! They kicked the shit out of us that night, yet, according to the press, WE started it as Kidd committed the first foul.

Strangely enough, they played the rags in the next round, and did exactly the same to them. It may come as a surprise to learn that the same press pack decided that it was Juve who were the culprits!

Plus ca change, plus la meme chose.
