City v Shakhtar Post Match

Beat a really decent team tonight. Sorry for Kun but that said I think it would be more fitting for him to equal the record with a goal from open play. We are cursed with bad injuries to our key players hope Mendy is not out for too long.

Shaktar were as well drilled a team as any I've seen for a while, they managed 50% possession first half, and knocked us out of our rhythm. Apparently they have had the same squad for the last three years (no signings) and some of their one-touch stuff was impressive, as was their pace when driving forward. Having said that, I reckon that makes the result more satisfying than games where we steam-rollered the opposition. Bernardo and Gundo, how sickening for SD to see them come on, and then slot straight in; can't be far away from both being starters. Purely a personal thing, but I am not impressed by 60 yard cross-field passes, they give defenders ample time to organise, and I'm a bit surprised that Pep condones it. What a bonus though when our keeper is so brilliant at distribution, proper football brain that lad, great signing.

He had a good game for sure. But before we get too carried away, how many crosses did he fire in, let alone assists? He defended well, which I guess is a LB's first responsibility. But offers little or nothing going forward, especially wide left. Where were the overlaps with Sané?
Walker didn't put many crosses in either, which makes me think it was on Pep's orders they both played conservatively, especially in the 1st half.

not many 'boos' tonight at the anthem thankfully. Uefa treated us right this year by not submitting to Tepas/barca to sanction us. of course, my opinion only.

It was a tough game tonight and there were plenty of positives (notably Delph who was excellent in playing in an unfamiliar position).

Grinding out a result is something we didn't do enough of last season so it was good to see us stick at it and get the rewards in the second half. Shakhtar are a good side, I can see why they gave Napoli a hard time.

For me Fernandinho just shaded Delph for MotM, that goal-saving tackle in the first half was brilliant and crucial but credit to both for excellent performances.
