CL knockout stages record

The last four years have seen very significant refereeing decisions impact games, conveniently not a single one of 8 off the top of my head in our favour.
We ain't winning this competition.
VAR will see to that.
Oh, and on a related note, VAR will see to Utd winning the prem in 20/21. VAR has now made it possible to choose the winner that is required to improve the "product".

Its been embarassing. End of.

Look at the state of the goals we concede. We act as if VAR has given 5 penalties against us each game. Majority of the goals we have conceded have been shocking. VAR may have gone against us in other parts of the game but im sorry, concede that many goals then you can't win.

It's a knockout competition, it only has to make one decision each year to put us out. Unless it's against LiVARpool and needs 4.

Up until this year its been 2 legs in the QF mate thats not an excuse. The fact is, we consistently get it wrong at the highest level and quite frankly we have rarely come up against amazing opponents, we just don't get the basics right and fuck ourselves.

Even more reason to perform at our maximum because we know what will happen when we don't.
If we are at our very very best then these decisions become irrelevant. However, when margins are tight they are decisive. No other bloody team has to cope with this.

What difference does that make, you're talking about the Champions League, it only takes 1 mistake or 1 decision to completely change a tie between two closely matched sides. Yes we get things wrong, so do other teams, the margins are so finely balanced every little thing can have a huge impact. We've got no devine right to win games but we do have a right to be officiated in the same way as our opponents and that simply does not happen. The CAS case proves UEFA has it in for us and if they can't take us down off the pitch, they will do everything possible to do it on the pitch when we can't get an independent court to override them.

We've played hardly any games in the CL. There's all the talk of the pressure from our owners to win it. They'll want to, but they're not stupid, they know how difficult it is and I can't see them thinking a manager can come in a win it at the click of their fingers.

Liverpool hadn't won a league title in 30 years but had made it to 4 CL finals in that time and won twice. United have made it to 4 in the same time, winning two and losing two. Chelsea have made it to 2 CL finals, winning one and losing one. Arsenal and Spurs have made it to one final each both losing.

United are the only side in that list to have won the league in the same year as they won the CL.

That tells you the real story. We're still new to this competition. Yes we most certainly should have done better, but at the start of the last decade we hadn't won any trophy since 1976. We then managed to win 4 PL titles, a couple of FA Cups and a load of league cups as well as improving in the CL and making the quarters. We've broken all the records in domestic football.

European success will come, but looking at our starting 11 there's not a lot of experience in it at latter stages of tournaments. Pep's success at Barca was much more straight forward. He had the best player on the planet and two of the best midfielders in history. He had a team packed with winners. Bayern's team is similar this season. A blend of World Cup winners and young, athletic, talented players.

We're now the only league to have 4 competitions. Whilst Pep rotates in the league cup, I do think we'd be far better completely changing that team and avoiding playing so much football. Every little helps when you get to the latter stages of the CL. I don't personally think Pep's the man to win us the CL. The times we've wanted him to change things in the league but he persists (and generally proves us wrong), he always changes things in the CL when there's no need to.

As a player that loss must really hurt. You go and beat Madrid home and away and then your manager changes things for a game against Lyon. The team will have been so confident and buzzing for that game. It made no sense to change it and weaken their mentality by making them more wary of Lyon than they needed to be.
