2011-2012 (first ever CL for us)
We failed in group stage./Mancini

2012-2013
We failed in group stage./Mancini

2013-2014
1/8 finals vs Barca, we lost away we lost at home 1-4 in agg./Pellegrini

2014/2015
1/8 finals vs Barca, we lost away, lost at home, 1-3 in agg./Pellegrini, that Barca went on to win the whole thing.

2015-2016
semifinals, our best ever result to this date, beating D. Kijev in 1/8 round (win and draw) and PSG in 1/4 round (win and draw), against Real in semis we couldnt not score lost 1-0 in agg., but that Real went on to win the whole thing at least./Pellegrini

2016-2017
1/8 finals loss to Monaco, 6-6 in total less away goals scored./Pep

2017-2018
1/8 final we beat Basel 5-2 in agg, 1/4 finals we lose home and away to Pool 5-1 in agg./Pep

2018-2019
1/8 final we beat Schalke 10-2 in agg. who were lower half on Bundesliga at the time, then in 1/4 finals Tottenham screwed us 3-3 less away golas scored they were like 30 points behind us in PL.

2019-2020
1/8 finals we beat Real M 3-1 in agg. winning away and home, then against Lyon in 1 game tie we lose 1-3, they are 7th of French League./Pep

Based on all this we only had 2x times when we had a similary strong oponent in knockout stages and we advanced, once against PSG with Pelle and now with Pep vs Real.
Still Pelle's rated higher imo as there we only lost later vs the winner here we lost to Lyon who will concede like 4-5 vs Bayern. also because we were in CL semis for the first and last time since that.

D. Kijev, Basel, Schalke lets be honest they would not finish top10 in PL.

Pelle losing to Barca in early round in 2014 and 2015 are not a horrible bad result, they had Neymar, Messi much younger, still Iniesta there etc more like very bad draws for us.

But for Pep to suffer against Monaco, Lyon, Tottenham and even that Liverpool who were 20-30 points behind in PL in 2018 April is something very hard to swallow when Pep was sold to us over Pelle/Mancini as someone finally making sure we dont repeat what we did under Mancini (group stage failures) and what we did under Pelle not really be able to deliver big with him in big CL games apart from that PSG tie once.

This is just made worse seeing that clubs like Ajax, Tottenham, Lyon, Leipzig can reach CL semis too even finals maybe without the constant solution at City which is another 150-200m spent on new players. If that would guarantee us CL semis/finals why we are not there under Pep? Lyon has been selling their best Fekir, Lacazette, Ndombele, Ferlan Mendy etc.

I have a feeling tactical mistakes, bad line ups, mental issues will not be corrected with signing new players. Once we correct those mistakes CL success will come and then the new signings with proper recruitment (players that improve us big time not like Cancelo, Mendy, rodri who cost a fortune but question marks over did they really improve us) will be needed to do it regularly not just a one off like Spurs or Lyon...

I've got no problem with the Monaco defeat. We played to our strengths, didn't try and reinvent the wheel, was robbed in the home leg by that corrupt Spanish **** ref when we should have put 7 past them, and played with pride for a newly put together side.

We just came up against a side with Bernardo, Mbappe and other quality players, and we didn't get the rub of the green.

Why, in the face of that defeat, we felt we needed to become some ultra-defensive, anti-football team in Europe is what baffles me the most when we're the most feared, attacking side in Europe in normal circumstances.

One thing is that being overlooked is on how differently we are being refereed in the Champions League. Not a conspiracy theory post but its obsveration that have made. It has always happened no matter who was in charge

Thanks for posting all that, good to see the overview of results laid out like that. Your op doesn’t say it directly, but I assume the clear implication here, is new manager?

The real Madrid away with pellegrini was shocking but I liked that he changed the system we pretty much had dinho and Fernando sitting with toure further forward

The last four years have seen very significant refereeing decisions impact games, conveniently not a single one of 8 off the top of my head in our favour.
We did get a funky penalty at Tottenham. But yeah that's it.

Even more reason to perform at our maximum because we know what will happen when we don't.

We've played some very bad games over the years but rarely has there been a bigger gap between what we are capable of and the level we performed at.

And it's almost entirely down to Pep. Some City fans disagree but the only defence has been look at what went against us whilst ignoring the inadequacies of our game.

Not with one hand tied behind our backs. Our rivals tend to get the decisions at the right times
