I’m a big fan of Rock/Metal and Prog music so maybe I surprise even myself by having a very soft spot for some Classic R&B/Soul.
Here are my Sweet Top Six in no order.

The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding.
Your Love is taking me higher and The Sweetest Feeling - Jackie Wilson.
Under the Boardwalk and Saturday Night at the Movies - The Drifters.
Just give me a little more time -Chairman of the Board.

PJ only just noticed this thread. Your post has brought up lots of emotions. I lost my big sister a few months back and she was a big Drifters fan so I have many many fond memories of 'listening in' to her playing those songs, and some of the others you mention, when I was little :-)

If I remember correctly Bruce Willis committed a crime against music in the 80s covering Under the Boardwalk.

One artist I'd recommend if you're not familiar is William Bell. He's not as famous as some of the other Stax greats but he should be more widely known than he probably is. Amongst other things, along with Booker T, he co-write Born Under a Bad Sign which became a big blues hit for Albert King. He also wrote and had a hit with Private Number. Great voice and lots of great songs. Still with us and even got a Grammy for his last album in 2016.
