Clattenburg stood down this weekend.

Mark Clattenburg will not take charge of a Premier League game this weekend having travelled alone to West Bromwich Albion’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace last Saturday so he could make it back to Newcastle in time to attend an Ed Sheeran concert, according to reports.

Referees must travel with their assistants to and from games for security and integrity purposes but Clattenburg drove by himself to The Hawthorns so he could return home in enough time to attend the gig at the Metro Radio Arena, according to the Daily Mail and the Sun.

Clattenburg also allegedly spoke to the Crystal Palace manager, Neil Warnock, while in his car after the game but Premier League rules allow referees to speak to managers only when their assistants are present or when given permission by the Professional Game Match Officials.

From the Mail

Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg will miss next weekend’s round of fixtures for breaking protocol so he could watch an Ed Sheeran concert.
Clattenburg travelled in his own car to officiate the West Bromwich-Crystal Palace match in order to get back to Newcastle in time to see the award-winning singer-songwriter perform at the Metro Radio Arena last Saturday.
Premier League regulations require the referee and his assistants to travel together to and from games for integrity and security purposes.

Crickey he has poor taste in music as well (LOL).

He was piss poor at the AFL grand final and was stood up and overwhelmed by a 74 year old from Wales.

the man is a cheat and should be nowhere near a football pitch, this rule though is a joke.

Why is the rule a joke ?
Don't let the smoke screen of an Ed Sherran concert fool you. The important bit is being covered up.

Rules state he should travel with his assistants for integrity purposes, i.e. so he cannot do anything corrupt. He spoke to Warnock against all the rules. If Palace had just beaten City because of a dodgy penalty decision would you say it was a joke rule ?

Perhaps he needed to be alone to 'fix' the match so he used the concert as an excuse. What about dodgy/illegal bets ? It should not be a one match ban, it should be a season long ban to send a message out to corrupt officials but as usual they have fudged it because of his so called reputation.

I do wonder how they found he had spoken to Warnock though ! Who grassed him ?

What I don't quite get is where do the 4 officials travel together to and from? They don't all come from the same town and most likely come from widely different parts of the country. They can only travel together up to a certain point then go (or come from) their own separate ways.
