Claudio Gomes

Got 10 minutes of the bench last night, but Barnsley look to be in difficulty. Only took 2 points from 15 in September and the Tykes are turning on Schoop. The defeat last night saw Forest climb above them and the fans now fear relegation.

A lot of our loans seem to result in very limited game time?

I am not sure about that. Lews Fiorini and Callum Doyle are earning a lot of game time while the manager of Hamburg has said that Tommy Doyle needs a couple more weeks (he made his first substitute appearance this week). Some loans (Nmecha and Adarabioyo) have been very successful and led to a new career for players. It is poor, for us and the player, when they don't get the minutes we expect but perhaps they are not quite as ready as we think, sometimes.

True. Still early in the season, of course, and for some of these lads it’s a case of acclimatizing and, especially in the Championship, dealing with the physical rigors of the game. Huge step up from playing in our ‘young stiffs’ to playing adults, but if they persist and keep working, their quality will shine through.

What I recognize is that we produce proper footballers now, not simply physical specimens, so sometimes it takes the receiving team to play football to get the best out of them.

Exactly, hence we should hopefully always be looking to send the kids to teams who not only play them but also play football

Ideally yes, but there can never be any guarantee of that, so some players are always going to have a choppy ride. Barnsley looked a stable destination- made the play offs in the spring- but the loss of Ismael to the Albion and arrival of Schopp at the end of June means they’re currently in a bit of flux. We also have to remember that Gomes only arrived there right at the end of August, so he’s only been there a month in a time when the manager is learning not only about a new league but also his contracted players. Anyway, they’re at home to draw specialists Milwall this afternoon, so maybe he’ll get some more time.

Played the whole game away at Reading today. Barnsley lost again, alas, though it appears the performance was much better than those of late, and Reading were perhaps fortuitous to win. Pressure still on Schopp, but maybe he’s found a better system and one that can see Gomes, who seemed to do well, get more game time.

Played the whole game against Boro tonight but yet another defeat. Two draws and six defeats in their last eight games and they’ve slipped down to 23rd. They seem to have secured more possession in the last two games but cannot buy a goal for love nor money. I’d say the natives are restless but that wouldn’t be doing them justice, as they seem almost unanimous in wanting the manager gone. They now have a run of games against Sheffield Utd, Bristol City, Hull City, and Derby County, so if the board is going to Schopp elsewhere, I thank you, then they’d probably want to make that change now. Not sure what that’ll mean for Gomes.

Like all our loanees....if they're good enough they will play, our youth teams may be good but not many will ever play regularly for top sides, despite plenty of clamour for them "to be given a chance" , their loan is their chance, and like any player we buy for the 1st team, they need to stand out at lesser sides.
Lets be honest....any player loaned to EFL sides or Scottish sides need to be first on the "team of the season" (voted for by the players they are up against) to have the remotest chance of even warming our first team bench in their careers .

Congratulations to Barnsley this evening. They finally managed to win, at long last, and maybe they should have parted company with Schopp earlier. Gomes seems to be playing well and their fans are starting to recognise that he is a good player. Might have picked up a knock tonight so here’s hoping he‘s okay and able to cement his position.
