Club Badge (merged)

Latest - Sky haven't filmed it and it looks like they won't be filmed, so please if you can book on to one of the talks. This link gives videos on the history of the badges, more info and details of how to book on - http://www.mcfc.co.uk/News/Club-news/2015/October/Badge-Consultation. I would urge everyone who can to book a place. These talks have been offered via the website since 17/10, so places may be limited.

Only just really switched onto all this badge stuff.

Whilst I don't mind our current creation, I can understand most people's longing for the older circular one. However I agree with one of the earlier posts in that commercially, we may be looking for trouble updating it now or in the coming years, due to it's branding and position, but if we could, I'd like to see something like this -

1) The circular badge as used from the 70's to 1997, with the same shield design and colouring, i.e black, gold & blue would be the core of the new design. This is the strongest and most bold / stand out, of all our badges.
2) The ship would remain within the top half of the shield and the three rivers would be in the bottom half. This defines the City of Manchester in total.
3) The final element would be to introduce the "Superbia In Proelio" - "Pride In Battle" motto sash which would either lie directly across the centre of the shield, or "drape" over the bottom half across the 3 rivers section. It defines our more modern history and the MCFC of today, as we have fought back from the depths of 3rd tier football to the heights of English champions.

It uses elements from all 3 historical badges, but loses the blandness of the original 30's circular one, the red rose from the 70's version, and the Eagle and stars from the current look. - Maybe freshen up the design a little, but I'd be happy with that.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

Trade Mark Law applies within the European Union.
Its unenforceable elsewhere - how do you think the street tailors of China and Taiwan and many other areas of the South East Asian continent get away with knocking TM stuff out by the millions?

Great post, totally agree with this. The only connection the eaglr has to City is a designer from Kappa in 1997 liked it and they happened to be doing our kits that year. Same with the latin and stars.

The eagle has some obscure connection to Manchester for a few years in the 50s, but I doubt many knew much about it before 1997.

We've got the opportunity to have a badge that is instantly recognisable as Mancunian, instantly recognisable as City. A badge that represents our past and future. The round badge with ship and 3 river shield does all of those things.
I'd be a little careful about wanting the badge with the "3 rivers on it",i'm not sure those diagonal stripes do represent the Irwell,Irk & Medlock.

Manchester can trace its heraldic routes back to the 13th century, when Roger de Grelley was first issued with a crest. In 1301 when Manchester was granted its first charter which gave its townspeople certain rights and privileges, the feudal lords the de Grelley family simply applied their own shield. This shield is described as 'Gules three bendlets enhanced or.', which simply translates as on a red shield three diagonal stripes in gold. Heraldry allows interpretation and so many variations of this can be found. A popular myth is that the three Bendlets or stripes represent the three rivers, but no historical evidence supports this view.

were there lots of Antelopes back in the 14th century in these parts too? lol

no, i'll keep the 'moon's' thanks. why 1884?? .... if you mean 1894 and if you mean 18 on the left and 94 on the right, that is ridiculous, you cant split up a year, it just becomes two seperate numerical values and looks shite.

Absolute rubbish - many other club badges adopt this form. It's the obvious thing to do.

"the obvious thing to do" ..... give me a break ...... have the date, fine, but no need to split it up like its an afterthought with nowhere else to put it on the badge..

give me 5 examples of "the many" that looks good and doesnt say, "whoops, we forgot to add it earlier, lets just plonk it in there and in there"

Go to Gary James' lecture/discussion. I did before the match yesterday as a Supporters Club member and it was very interesting and changed my thinking slightly. I won't say how or what because I have to report back to the Eccles SC first but if you get the chance attend the events organised.

Thanks Gary and thanks to City for giving us the chance (& providing refreshments!!)

Thanks for those comments. I totally agree that as many fans as possible should get to the lectures. So far there have been a large number of people coming with one view and when they leave after hearing about all the elements and badges they change their minds. It's amazing how many views have changed really which then leaves me to hope that most fans haven't had a knee jerk reaction and gone for elements based on memories of moments rather than the long term view of what matters to them.

I've been surprised, for example, at the number of people who arrive believing the red rose badge was on shirts when they were kids. Sometimes it was the original - long time - badge with the stripes, but often they're thinking about the period 1976 to 1981 when the red rose badge was not worn on shirts.

Similarly, I've heard people talking about the 'original' badge when they've meant the second (red rose) badge and vice versa.

I think everyone who has come to the talks has gained something - including me (I was given some new info on something the other day which has also changed my view a little). I would urge all fans to consider every badge, every element and if in doubt ask. I'll be more than happy to post info on here if it helps decision making. I do keep posting odd snippets on my own Facebook but, more than anything else, please engage with the process. If you want something entirely new then get those views stressed as well. We need to think about our future and where we want to be positioned and who our rivals will be. It may be that not one element from our past is appropriate, or it could be that one single element sums it all up. I'm an historian who believes that we need to understand our past to progress, develop and move forward, not one who thinks simply resurrecting something from our past is the answer.

I've really enjoyed hearing the views of everyone I've met to discuss the badge, and enjoyed reading the comments on here, but I do worry that minds could be made up based on misconceptions etc. so I would urge everyone to come to the talks, watch the videos and ask those questions.

In the meantime... A trivia question (not for those who've attended a lecture): what was the first City specific badge worn on the pitch at Wembley (not the coat of arms, a City specific badge)? I'll post the answer tomorrow. Bonus point for the name of the 1st person on the pitch wearing it.

Has anyone got a link to the badge consultatoon video they showed a half time on Saturday? Almost brought a tear the eye..
