Coldplay - Glastonbury

Last weekend myself and my youngest daughter(26) went to see "The Clone Roses"and She told me that her Mum - my first wife, we got divorced over twenty years ago likes Coldplay. When we were together she really liked Phil Collins and Sting. I think that ends the debate. A shockingly awful, dreary band.
and just to save on Ric and Damo's bandwith; reference yesterdays thread about the headline act in three words;

U2 - Still really awful.

I think thats it.....they are dreary, but they arrived at a time when there was a gap in the market, and they were (arguably) the best of the dreary bunch.

Personally, I don't care if its deemed cool or "uncool" to like a band (I like U2!!) but if Coldplay are considered a great band, then British music is in a far worse state than I thought

I must be missing something with Coldplay. Got a couple of albums but couldn't be bothered going to see them. I know people who say they are brilliant live but I just can't imagine their music generating a great gig. Nothing seen on TV would convince me otherwise but I accept that isn't the same as being there.

I've been to see them once.

all seated gig at the MEN in December 2008, i was sat three-quarters of the way back on the standing area, and i am extremely fussy on being far away at gigs as i absolutely hate it.

It was undoubtedly one of the greatest gigs i've ever been to in my life.

Totally agree. I was miles away up in the Gods but it was bouncing where we were.

I think some people have a pre-conceived opinion that it's uncool to like Coldplay and that they're something of a "wet lettuce" band. But their live performances blow that myth to bits.

IT's interesting what you two have said. I go to see loads of bands and I'm not bothered whether it's cool or not or anything like that. And I know sometimes I've not been too bothered about a band and then been won over seeing them live. Maybe I'll give them a go next time there's the chance.

They were incredible tonight. Now one of the bands I NEED to see live. You don't quite realise how many of their songs are anthemic, so you find yourself singing along to them and really enjoying it.

Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall could be one of their killers live. Outstanding.

Very much this !

Will be going to see them when they are next touring just to see 'every teardrop is a waterfall' live!
Gave me goosebumps tonight seeing that.

I've never really been into Coldplay, they have a few decent songs but they always seemed a bit sterile. However, I was totally impressed with that Glasto set. Don't think I'll be running out to buy their albums but I have a new found respect for them. I watched U2 on Friday night and really wasn't impressed. Even though I much prefer (earlyish) U2 to Coldplay there was no comparison between the performances.

Fair shout this. I'd also prefer U2 but based on those performances Coldplay win easy. Maybe because they go out with the right attitude and want to prove something whereas U2 act like they've already done it and just their name across the back drop is enough.

I'm not a Coldplay fan but I watched their Glastonbury set to give them a chance, I thought they were alright, nothing special but not terrible. I can understand that their fans would have really enjoyed it and there did seem some good interaction between the band and the fans, which is always good. I might not like their songs, but fair play they can deliver them live.

For me, they just don't have the tunes to back up the hype. I like the Scientist and a couple of their other songs, but most of it is indistinctive. Instead of catchy choruses and killer lyrics they resort to filler with Martin doing it in that high pitched drone, fair enough that makes them distinctive, but it also makes them a bit boring.

Bands always divide opinion and thats what its all about, I think if you like Coldplay, you'd have loved their Glasto set and if you weren't a fan to begin with I don't think it would have been likely to convert you.
