Colin Bell St Johns last night

Sorry, I know this isn't the point of this thread but it's here so I think its important to make sure people know you can't 'revive' someone with CPR. They need an AED (defibrillator) for that so you'll never do a few chest compressions on someone who will then cough a bit and thank you very much for your help. If anyone is ever in the situation where someone is not breathing please don't give up because they don't sit up after a few minutes and offer to buy you a pint. Compressions are vital to keep the blood pumping to the vital organs - you don't even need to do rescue breaths (mouth-to-mouth) if you really don't want to - there will be enough oxygenated blood already in the body but it must be pumped round to prevent irreparable damage within minutes.

And while I'm on the subject, don't copy chest compressions from the TV cos they don't do them hard enough or quick enough. You need to do 100 per minute (think the beat of nelly the elephant) and if you do them right you'll probably break a couple of ribs. (Don't worry about being sued, it wont happen.)

Lesson over. As you were.

Sorry to be pedantic BBT but its 120 compressions a min - 2 per second :P Other than that your post is spot on.

Well done to all involved though - it's not easy.

I'm pleased I found this thread as I found the situation last night a bit perturbing. The paramedics were working on the guy for a good 25 minutes, and it did'nt look good.

It took a bit of the shine off for me, if I'm being honest. I had a month of watching the work done in the intensive care unit at Wythenshawe hospital in September, and the emotions came rolling back, but I'm made up the guy is still with us.

Let's hope he makes a decent recovery.

It makes no odds really - just do something and don't get hung up about the numbers!

(But it is 100 ;p http://www.redcross.org.uk/standard.asp?id=56929 watch the adult CPR video)

That video also tells you to do the 2 breaths after 30 compressions, which you have already rightly pointed out you don't have to do straight away if you don't wish to, however if this is the case you have to give 400 straight compressions THEN you have to give the 2 breaths, then 30 compressions, the 2 breaths etc etc (it's very tiring). Obviously there are no fast and hard rules - after looking through the internet I've noticed different sites say anything from 80 - 120 compressions per minute (to be fair to you most do say 100) but if you were to phone for an ambulance in ANY English speaking country in the world the Emergency Medical Dispatcher you speak to will instruct you to give 2 compressions per second - 120 a minute.
