Colin Bell....

He would just ghost through any defense with his running power and the next minute would make a sliding tackle at left fullback pass the ball and be in a position to receive a pass on the right wing, who out of Scoles Gerrard or Lampard could do that, there were better dribblers ,better goal scorers, better defenders, but in the words of Jimmy Hill when the King retired, he was the most complete footballer he has ever seen, also to me he was God, never too be replaced or be seen again in my lifetime, seen some great players but never seen anything as good

There isnt anyone like him really and I'm sorry you didnt witness him in action. I agree, Gerrard is probably the closest but comes up short in the tackling,heading.....nah on second thoughts he's nothing like him. Was there at the newcastle game - think everyone was just glad too see him put boots on again - it was long wait. Totally under used by England

Never saw Peter Docherty play but some say he was the best we've ever had. We've had nobody near since Colin Bell. All over the pitch, goals, headers, tackles, the lot. You had a feeling going down to Maine Road that with Bell in the side you wouldn't lose.

Can't think of a modern player who is a bit of a match for him. If I close my eyes and watch Messi I can't see Colin Bell, nor can I see FatFrank, StevieStarfish, and TheGingerPIg.

Too young to remember Colin myself but looks to have been the complete player. I used to have a t-shirt with King Colin and underneath were the words......Better then Best...

What I would like to know is which modern(ish) player is/was like Colin Bell? From the limited action that I have seen I would say he looks like a Lampard/Scholes/Gerrard type?

gerrard
No Gerrard +50%, simply the most complete player I have ever seen.

Both Joe Mercer and Bill Shankley regarded Peter Doherty as the best player they'd ever seen, let alone the best City player. Bell was unique for me, I remember a tackle on the edge of our box by him, passes it to the wing, 5 seconds later he's in their box sticking it in the net.

Bell disguised throwing a little burner very well, so well when he got into hurry-up mode he reminded me very much of Cruyff.

Went to my first game in 1969 - CB was my hero and I reckon Bell/Lee/Summerbee formed the holy trinity of football at that time and have never been bettered since.

My dad still says Bell is the best footballer hes ever seen
He was there in the Kippax when he made his comback(came on for the 2nd half against Newcastle?)
He said grown men had tears in their eyes on the Kippax as no-one thought he would ever return to football because the injury was that bad, he received a standing ovation for about 10 minutes i think

Pretty sure it was Newcastle , long time ago now . Flashback tells me the ovation went on for EVER . True legend .

Colin was just an amazing player, along with Buzzer, Frannie and Nelly we would have won the league by now if they played for us now...
