Never saw Peter Docherty play but some say he was the best we've ever had. We've had nobody near since Colin Bell. All over the pitch, goals, headers, tackles, the lot. You had a feeling going down to Maine Road that with Bell in the side you wouldn't lose.

Can't think of a modern player who is a bit of a match for him. If I close my eyes and watch Messi I can't see Colin Bell, nor can I see FatFrank, StevieStarfish, and TheGingerPIg.
Both Joe Mercer and Bill Shankley regarded Peter Doherty as the best player they'd ever seen, let alone the best City player. Bell was unique for me, I remember a tackle on the edge of our box by him, passes it to the wing, 5 seconds later he's in their box sticking it in the net.

I remember one similar, where he headed the ball clear from a corner against us, was then involved in midfield making a couple of passes to switch play before finishing it off from near the penalty spot. In the ground it looked fanatsic, watching it on MOTD later with just a couple of cameras it looked ok but nothing special.

I also remember watching highlights of him playing for England in a match against NI. He got the man of the match award which the commentators said was fully justified the way he'd controlled the match. Yet watching the game on telly he didnt seem to do much, my mates who weren't City fans had been going on about him being invisible.

If he'd played today with multiple camera angles he'd have been much more widely appreciated.

They'd need extra cameras to keep up with him!

If he'd have been at Liverpool, the rags or Leeds he would be seen as an all time great by everyone.

Love watching the old videos, his running from box to box was incredible. Wish I had a time machine.

There are three basic types of central midfield player:

1. The box to box player who will run all day.

2. The holding midfielder who can tackle back, break up play and win the ball (eg Nigel De Jong).

3. The supplementary striker who will score large number of goals each season (eg Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard).

Colin Bell was top class at all three roles. He had speed, grace and strength.

I don't think such a player exists in the modern game. Remember in Bell's day, they had to play on mudpatches for half the season.
