What do we make of this comment?

Collina: "A player has the right to fall down if a foul was committed. It is very different if he falls down without any contact." @BenSmithBBC 7 minutes ago

A "right to fall down"?? What nonsense is that? If a foul has been committed, the player should get a free kick whether he falls down or not, surely. You just play advantage with the guy on his feet and if none accrues, then give the free kick (and I don't mean misses with a shot instead of gets a penalty. If the shot misses, give the penalty). What Collina is saying is i) that referees can only see fouls if the player falls down ii) Referees don't play advantage properly so players think they HAVE to fall down. In that case, he is saying be like Young and fall over, and not like Aguero and try to stay on your feet. Makes me seethe!

That's why we can't really have replays regarding penalties or any diving incidents regarding 'contact'

One of the best refs ever has just said a player can go down if he's fouled, even if he can stay on his feet.

So we can cut out outright dives but not soft penalties or players going down easily, all amounts to diving.

As alan Hansen said Robert Pires dive versus Pompey was a foul because of contact, even though Pires orchestrated it himself. If pundits can't figure out cheating then we have no hope

Well, that's a win in the back of Suarez and half of Rags team.

Suarez had some no contact dives but his main problem that made his diving reputation is making the much more of a foul than it really is. He often is fouled but make a normal contact/foul as leg breaking one.

I have often felt that fouls committed where the player carried on aren't given because it is the 'falling down' part that the sways the ref's decision sometimes.

Case in point, had Aguero missed 'that' shot, it should have been a pen, but it wouldn't have been because he didn't fall over.

ratboy's half decent take on the issue....

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNx5ok60U6A" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mNx5ok60U6A</a>

as Kun said the other week, leave it for the referees to decide who is fooling them and who isn't. a player will go down under minimum contact to ensure they get a free-kick, and why wouldn't they especially when they're less likely to get a decision in their favor if they're fouled and stay on their feet.

And then they have the nerve to tell us that if we haven't played the game "at this level" we don't understand the issue.

For example: Owen: "I could have stayed up. It is a very difficult subject to talk about. Especially to people who haven't played the game." @BenSmithBBC 8 hours ago.

Moron.

Referees moan about diving but they havent helped themselves. The amount of players you see (Sergio being prime example the other week) who get fouled but dont receive the freekick or penalty because they stay on their feet is atrocious.

It basically forces the player into going down

Collina was shite! The bald head blinded people to how crappy he really was. He made some bloody howlers that would make the likes of Crappenberg, Halsey, and Dowd look like St. Thomas Aquinas of the reffing world! Probably the best Italian ref there's ever been but that's like saying that Andy Carroll was the best Geordie donkey the Dippers have ever spent £35m on!

Exactly. It's little wonder players are diving all over the place when senior officials are telling them it's the only way they will get given a decision. Players shouldn't be falling over if not forced to by the foul itself, but then the referees should be applying the laws correctly and rewarding them for staying on their feet by playing advantage and giving freekicks/penalties when necessary.
